Cacti Grafting
    #1654294 - 06/22/03 08:43 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Just incase anyone who dosent know peoyte cacti usualy take a very long time to grow before anyting can be done with them ect. So to speed there growth rate up all you need to do if cut the root of the cacti and stick it on to a faster growing one.

So i decided to have a go and grafted my peoyte to a san pedro so far it has been 7 days and everything seems ok. All i realy need is advice on what to look out if the graft dosent take and if my technique was ok, so here it is.

I started by takeing the peoyte and cut it with a clear sharp knife just above the root this is to hopefully allow the roots to grow back some new shoots.

Next I found a san pedro cacti that had the same diameter as my cut peoyte. Again using a sharp clean knife i cut of the vey top of the san pedro. Next using superglue I placed a small amount around the edge of the peoyte and firmly pressed them both together, till the glue dried. Thats basicaly it.

When I get some time I will try a put up a pic.

Hmmm . havent heard of the super glue method.. sounds interesting.. It can be done with  very  very small scion's too.. you can graft a peyo seedling at 2 months  ..  they will grow fast

sounds cool so far jezu! as long as you have the vascular rings together and no air bubbles you should be fine! i am seriously considering the superglue method... does it stick well even with both surfaces being wet?

jojoba: 2 months? how many milimeters does it has at this age? it should require a damn skill!

actually grafting young seedlings is pretty easy (as long as you work clean, swift and don't shake to much ).

There's a pretty easy guide HERE that's how i do it.

The pic shows a 10 days old peyote i grafted onto a Trichocereus, it will start to grow in a couple of days.

very nice una! now are you using both sides of the peyo after it is cut for 2 grafts or are you sacrificing the root end?

Yep it sticks no problem I just use the glue around the edges to securly fix both cacti together. Also I cut the peoyte just above the root, so hopefully this will regrow as well.

and i'll try to graft upside down the low half of the pup... (~1cm dia).

pup in question:

i'll let you know how it follows...

Here are some pics:

peyote seedling, 15 days old grafted on Pereskiopsis. They grew together overnight and the seedling is starting to swell now.

The taproot of a small peyote button was grafted on this Myrtillocactus 2 years ago.

15 days old seedling grafted on Myrtillocactus 4 days after grafting.

Various grafted peyote seedlings. All grafted 5 days ago.

Here's one that i did two days ago, the bandages were just removed.

For this graft a peyote button was uprooted and cleaned under running tap water. It was dried and set aside.

Stock plants were prepared by cutting the tops off and bevelling the edges. Then another thin slice was cut off but left on.

The peyote button was cleaned on the outside with alcohol 85% then cut in two. With a very sharp scalpel the edges of both up- and downside of the scion were bevelled slightly. Then a very thin slice was cut off, the slices left on the stock were removed and both scion were placed on the stock.

They were secured with PVC insulation tape because it stick to clay as well as plastic pots. It's also a little bit elastic. I put a small piece of polyfill in the middle to prevent direct contact between the scion and the TAPE. The pots were covered with a ziplock bag and left in a shady spot for two days.

I just removed the tape and they look fine  No black tissue and a good fit. Let's see how this will grow
