Re: An Englishman's home is his (A) Castle or: (B) Dungeon? [Re: Xlea321]

So you don't think the 11,000+ gun deaths in the US compared to the less than 100 gun deaths in the UK is a consequence of the UK not having legal firearms?

i'm not talking about just gun deaths, but violent crime in general. if you want to narrow it down to just murder, that's fine, but it makes no sense to address only crime involving guns and ignore all other violent crime.

it's certainly possible that banning guns reduces gun crime, and if it were really possible to completely eliminate all guns, then it would drop to zero... but what about other violent crime? i'd like to see a reduction in all violent crime.

if banning guns does not make people safer, i think your whole argument here is lost right out of the gate.

So you'd think there'd be just as many deaths? That these people would simply pick up knives and manage to kill just as many people?

thats kindof what i'm asking you. in britain, how many less murders were commited after guns were banned? what about australia?

Can you assure me that "Dr. Miguel Faria" isn't yet another foaming at the mouth right-wing lunatic and has a little more crediblity than that "Lott" guy you used to post articles by who was utterly discredited?

alex123, i was quoting raw statistics that can be independently verified. the fact that you "have a feeling" that one guy who cited them might not share the same views as you doesn't make them any less valid.

"They aren?t keeping the crime figures down either. An International Crime Victimisation Survey from a couple of years ago shows that, while crime fell during the 1990s in America and most of the rest of the world, it remained steady in Britain.

Meanwhile, gun crimes are on the increase. According to the Sunday Times, the number of firearm offences in the UK increased almost 40 percent from 4,903 in 1997 to 6,843 in 2000. Last year the figure broke through the 10,000 barrier for the first time.

Of course, these numbers fade into insignificance when compared to the States? and not just because of the difference in population sizes. But the point is that the trend is the opposite of what you?d expect. Effective gun laws should keep the figures steady; preferably at zero. Instead we find that overall gun crime in England and Wales has quadrupled since 1981."
