Mycology: Self Taught or Taught?
    #3452829 - 12/06/04 01:58 AM (12 years, 8 days ago)

Strive through the ventures yourself from day 1? OR Did someone held your hand while you crossed the street?
You may choose 1
I hit the books...
Held that hand tight

i found Starter's help absolutely great! everytime i had a question he came back with an essay full of answers, but you need to read over the teks yourself aswell, so a mixture of both

Hey Dobinky,

Too bad can only choose one.
Cause I do both, asking a lot here and holding hands. But that is the cream on my reading!

GL!

First thing I did, when I stumbled into this great place, was read all the FAQ's, archives, grow logs & teks for a month & printed those I liked into a to/do book.

I decided to skip "cakes" & go straight into bulk.

Started composting, bought AA PC, more jars than I could ever use, built glove box & hit it, starting with WBS, G2G spawn propagation, bulk substrate & casings.

Many many mistakes along the way. But, that is how you LEARN.

PATIENCE & dedicated effort PAYS OFF, for those who keep on keeping on.

With time you find how wise ANNO & all those that came before him - REALLY ARE. Another good face to face reality lesson is to visit & tour a commercial grower, if possible.

Best advice I can give is to buy an AA PC, the bigger the better. Next buy or construct a flowhood. Next is to learn composting (if possible).

Once you have spores in your blood, they never leave.

I started growing back in 77 or so using Oss & Oeric's book and a Homestead print. I proceeded to grow some of the most beautiful molds you have ever seen  I learned sterile culture technique the hard way and started perfecting my agar technique from the start. I continued perfecting my mold culturing techniques on and off for the next two years then gave it up until I finally moved out from my parents and got out on my own. I met a party animal of a women (nurse) and moved in with her and setup a lab in a walkin closet plastic lined taped and sealed, this was what it took for me to succeed and I did. I bought one of the first prints of TMC along with several other mushroom cult books by Bigwood, Stevens & Gee and others and totally immersed myself quit my job and gave up my life in order to grow these wonderful gifts of nature. I have to says going into this without ever reading a book would have been totally foolish and a waste of good spores because IMHO anyone attempting to grow shrooms should be somewhat educated (DOH!) It was hard having such a strong desire and no PFTek or internet to fall back on, you guys should be damn thankful you have it so easy nowadays I know I am! Keep up the great work guys!

"We all have priorities. I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Ya I got priorities too!!!"

I certainly am NOT self-taught. Everyone here at the shroomery held my hand the whole damn way in the sense that whenever I had a question it was already answered for me in the many teks and FAQ's provided by the shroomery. And in the very rare case that I couldn't find the answer to the oddball question I might have had, the good people who spend thier time in this forum always helped me out.

I speak about this in the past tense as if I know it all, but please don't get me wrong. I have a LONG ways to go still. I'm still doing PF cakes in a PMP for christ sake, lol. Although, I hope to get a martha's soon and try some casings and I'll get that lost newb feeling again, hehe. I can't wait!
