Compost Comparison - Dung Bros vs. Homestead

I thought you'd all be interested to know that I'm doing a controlled comparison between DB compost and Homestead's compost...
Using 2 identical rye berry bags colonized with EQ mycelium from a multi-spore innoculation using the same syringe, I spawned 3 pounds of Homestead's compost in a plastic tub over 1/2" of moist vermiculite with one of the bags and 3 pounds of DB compost in a similar tub over 1/2" of moist vermiculite.
I then put the sealed (air-tight) tubs in seperate incubators at the same temperature (86F).
The results are quite the opposite of what I expected;
After 48 hours, the Homestead compost is 40% colonized with nice ropey mycelium. ?The Dung Brothers compost has shown no sign of growth at all.
WTF?????

Hey there,
Where did you get three(3) pounds of each of those items? Interesting about the EQ's shooting through the Homestead stuff...
Best regards,

Is the home steads compost that your talking about the same compost than comes in a blue bag in the homestead kits? Do you know if the peat in these kits is sterilized?

I had ordered a DB kit and I had 2 EZ-Gro kits, plus a friend sent me an extra bag of compost from their failed EZ-Gro kit. I've done Cambodians in two of the Homestead bags of compost and both colonized in record time and now the EQ's are doing the same...
So that explains where I got all that Homestead compost... The DB Kit came with a 15 lb. bag of "pre-pasteurized" DB compost. But it SUCKS!! NO Growth after over 56 hours now and I think the mycelium on the rye is dying.
What do I do? Re-pasteurize the compost? Sterilize it? Bake it?
I hate the fact that I already lost a perfectly good bag o' EQ colonized rye. Now I hate to think I have to throw out 12 pounds of DB compost!
What should I do?

No, this is EZ-Gro Kit compost, and no, the peat/lime that comes with the classic kit is not sterilized and they say it doesn't have to be.

Hey there,
That is a tough question...let's think on it overnight before the rush to judgement. I hate inaction in substrate...very irritating. !!

How should I pressure cook the homestead compost in my p/c? What type of container does it need to be in and how long?

Too late... I took a pillow case that had about 2 pounds of dry horse poo in it, dumped in the DB compost with the dead mycelium and rye berries, added the other 12 pounds of DB compost, shook well and put it in a 5 gallon soup pot and filled with water.
It's on the stove now heating up to 170F where it'll stay for 2 hours.
Wish me luck!
