Need opinions on substrate
    #342285 - 06/16/01 03:08 PM (23 years, 5 months ago)

Hello, my friend just acquired a nice pressure canner and has 1 syringe of EQ and 1 of Thai K.S. He has succesfully experimented with both before using BRF/VERM. with 1/2 pint jars(steam sterilized). With his new toy he hopes to improve on past successes. Having never used other substrate formulas he is a little overwhelmed with the choices now available to him.
Complicating matters is the fact that he just broke a finger on his left hand and has no use of the hand for 3-4 weeks. With the high cost of healthcare he has very little money to purchase anything other than birdseed(no quart jars, etc). Fortunately he has 2 Lbs of BRF, 22 1/2 pint jars, Verm, and the spore syringes w/ pressure canner.
Since he would like to go ahead and proceed with innoculation so they will be close to being done by the time his hand heals, he needs a proven formula using either just birdseed alone or a mix w/ BRF,VERM and seed that can be used in 1/2 pint jars. He has read Ryche's magic formula and Alien's substrate mix but is confused by the fact that they don't mention what size jars they use with them. He also wants to see what other experienced growers have used with success. This is the only opportunity he will have for a while as he will be forking over mega$$ to the hospital for the forseeable future and does not want to waste it. Please help!! Thank you!!

I have used bird seed before, just preboil it for 45 minutes. Then fill your jars up. I would add a teaspoon of crushed gypsum to each jar after preboiling and fill them half full, this way I could shake them, which helps speed up colonization. I used pint jars though any sized jar would work. The biggest pro to using birdseed is that it works very well as a spawn for manure, I dont know if you want to do this or not, as it uses slighlty more work, but yields are increased greatly. Otherwise brf and verm work very well for personal yields, I would use brf+verm and then make casings.

Thank you for the reply, but my friend is not a beginner , he has great success with the PF method but now would like to try something different.

As said before, birdseed or rye.(100g rye+110g water in a pint jar, sterilize for 1 hour in the pressure cooker, shake after PC while still hot)
You can then fruit these substrates directly or use to spawn manure or straw.
