parasites?
    #3336992 - 11/09/04 11:41 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

"Eating the mushrooms raw is dangerous, they can contain parasite eggs that may damage the liver"

Quote off of erowid??? Is this true with hunting wild mushrooms of any kind? Should you always prepare them? Do you think drying then freezing would kill the parasites? Also does apply to cultivated ones?

If you are picking a shroom off of shit you can safely assume that it may very likely contain parasites. Your body will most likely kill off the typical parasites that are encountered. However, there are some that it will not and that are very dangerous. Freezing usually doesn't kill parasites except at temps that you ain't gonna get in your standard freezer. Heat will kill most parasites however, so boiling them to make tea is best way to ensure you don't get the parasites. JMHO.

How long would the parasite last in the shrooms dried? Would they eventually leave the shroom after time? Are we talking about like tapeworm/heartworm/hookworm type of parasites?

GOD I HATE WORMS AND MAGGOTS!!!!!!!!!!!

When eating edible mushrooms many contain mild toxins that can cause a series of gastrol disturbances, and other mild symptoms. This is why wild edible mushrooms should always be cooked.

As far as parasite eggs, I've never heard that, but it probably isn't far from the truth. Psilocybes are generally to small to host insects, but I don't really know exactly what a parasite is....

Liver Flukes are an example.

The parasites (the liver flukes) live in the cow's bile ducts and produce eggs which are passed out in the cow shit. These develop into tiny worms which are picked up by an intermediate host, which is usually a snail. After a while the snail passes out the flukes onto nearby vegetation, forming cysts full of parasites which can exist for up to a year in the right conditions. Humans can catch the fluke infection when they eat contaminated mushrooms. The cysts pass into your small intestine where they open to release small worms which penetrate the wall of the intestines and move to the liver, finally ending up in the bile ducts, where the lifecycle starts again. Sometimes the worms end up in the lungs or skin instead. I took a class in parasitology, and believe me when I say that their are some nasty ass parasites that can pass from cow shit to the snail and finally into you. Cook your wild shrooms. I eat them uncooked too often and am glad to have this reminder of why I need to boil them.

What about heat destroying the magic in those shrooms?  Anyway, that's why you're supposed to wash all fresh veggies, inc. mushrooms, with plenty of clean water - to remove all those nasty little eggs & cysts & things.  YUK!  One thing's for sure - if you're gonna be worried about liver flukes & such, you don't need to be tripping!!!

I figure a few shots of tequila will take care of da liver flukes. I ain't worried. I've eaten more shrooms right off the shit than most people would ever believe humanly possible. I guess I was just responding to the topic. If you wanna be sure, the only real way is to heat them. As for messing with the majic, just throw in a few extras to make up for the potential loss of potency. I don't think heat is as bad as rumors would have us believe. I've boiled the hell out of shrooms before and tripped my ass off.

I have nver heard of this...not from me, or an other accounts of people eating shrooms raw. Im sure its possible if the cow is sick or something with some type of virus or parasite but then again, nobody I have heard of has gotten sick after eating shrooms.

Carefull, could be an attempt to spawn Uber bad trips. Simply because that is one of the most freaky ass things I've heard, icky icky worms/parasites.

All though I must agree that such an even could be held within the realm of possibility, just not as much in probability. So it could happen like that, but chances are not common.

OK. So, here's a link to some common parasites that you can pick up out of cow shit. Here's the good news though. Most ranchers are aware of the parasite problem and don't want their cattle infested, so they treat them for parasites, usually in their feed. Last word- don't worry about it. But take a look at some of these and try not to think about them next time you're tripping:

If you see little mushroom gnat larva. They look like little maggots i wouldnt eat it because its probably decomposing. No one wants to eat a rotting cap. It will make you violently ill and It is not at all fun with vomit pouring out like a faucet out your nose and mouth.

I ate a bunch of shrooms raw once and about half way into the trip decided I wanted to take a few more so went to my stash and grabbed a few. I was in the bathroom over the sink and saw something drop into the sink and it was wiggling. Then I turned the cap over and pulled the gills apart and their were maggots all up in it. I didn't puke but came damned close. All the other ones had them too but not as bad. I assume I ate a bunch with my first dose. I always check first now. Just damned nasty and worse when you're trippng.

Yeah that's what happened to me once. I noticed the little things afterwards and hadn't really tripped before exept once and that was about 3 or so years earlier. So seeing them tripped me out but I'm not freaked out much by them now. If I let the mushrooms drie out a bit than the maggots will like come out and die because the mushrooms lose their moisture and the maggots drie up with it.

Why did my post get deleted??? If you can get tapeworms from eating lawn grass you can get shit from eating wild unwashed mushrooms. Now that that is clear, can you get them from cultivated ones, bacterial maybe? Or is it only commonplace in outdoor greens and shrooms?

How hot must you get the water in order for it to kill off any possible parasites?
