In Mexico, the locals said to leave out the shrooms and the ants would come and clean up the maggots. It's a little strange, but they arent so bad. IMO?

the subject line of this question made me crack up, fucking hilarious. I am drying shrooms at the moment, they werent rotten before I started drying but some of them are black today, wondering if its alright to eat them still?!

What are some signs that mushrooms are rotten or otherwise unsafe to consume?

If they get wet and slimy when they shouldn't be, that is bacteria.  Also unusual odors - bacteria often smells like dirty socks or rotten food.

Hi all, I just picked some magic mushrooms from beside a river bed, I know they were the right ones, but they were blackened, I should have just left them, but anyway... I picked them and have been drying them. I ate a few, not the big black ones, but the little ones I found near it, and they've been fine... but just this morning I picked up one of the big black ones and there were little maggot looking things- they were drying with some other ones I'd picked from another place, and I opened a few of them up and they all seemed to be infested... I just chucked them all out, feeling a bit scared as I might have eaten a few of these little critters, as in worried about the outcome but hopefully my body kills the little fuckers and I'm ok...I've got a photo of them but I don't know how to post photos on here yet.

MOST wild mushrooms will have larvae of some sort or at least eggs(why cool weather mushrooms tend to be more primo). bugs have been in and been food since dawn of man. bad smells are bad smells because they are NOT GOOD for u. BLACK is not a good sign and best to keep looking for some fresher units. aswell as cant properly ID blackened/rotten mushrooms. few larvae is ok for me but if spongy from already being eaten once just leave it be.

I just had some air drying all looked good till this arvo when I noticed some being eaten by larvae ; they seemed to originate at the stipe and eat gills and flesh outwards, reduced the harvest that's for sure ! Interestingly enough harvested from 2 spots only 1 had this issue, trap for new players hey?
