Yes, he chose to ride the horse and tried to perform fancy equestrian moves with the beast. This resulted in his accident, one of the hazards of engaging in a rich man's sport I suppose.

Your wrong Swami. Positive thinking can provide the motivation we need to perservere. Maybe Mr. Reeves set his sights on walking...maybe that wasn't going to happen, but it provided him with the hope and perserverence to get on with life. It certainly made him a champion for disabled people. He ultimately amounted to more than just another mediocre actor by doing this.

Positive thinking can provide the motivation we need to perservere.
Can one not act without writing a mental script first?

Goal-setting is not the same as affirming something like, "I am getting healthier every day." One can just get on the treadmill with no affirmations or mental chatter and receive identical benefits.

Maybe I can clear it up a bit. An affirmation is like the beggining point that directs the action to be taken. You could really almost substitute it with the word goal.

Here are 2 sample affirmations:

I will see the Effiel tower.

I will always be stuck in this crumby hick town.

One has a more optimistic attitude and one doesn't.

So far my bet is on guy one to get out of dodge, but that isn't enough.

All it does is set a tone, a starting point for action to be taken. Ya have to know where it is ya want to go if your ever going to get there.

I don't know who ever said that saying, beleiving or thinking something alone is enough to make it happen. Somebody, somewhere has to take action.

When any of us talk about the use of affirmations, all they are talking about is "setting a tone" intention for where they want to direct active energy.

There is nothing mystical or magical about this. When any of us talk about it, we do so to let people with low self esteem, bad attitudes, and low self expectation know, that there is a way to more and it STARTS with resetting your tone for action-intention-affirmation.

It's not enough without the follow through of action, it is just a starting point, a pivital point, a catalyst to switch your active energy from going down hill to uphill.

Swami, do you realise that some people don't know that they can do this to change their life around in new positive directions? People who are depressed, discouraged, and beaten down by life do not know the power of setting tone, intention, with affirmation to steer their active energy in new directions. Of course, action must be taken.

But the guy who says, "I will always be working this lousy job forever" will continue to steer his active energy towards always working that lousy job. if he beleives its all hes worthy of then, he'll first have to change his beleif about himself before he even gets to setting an affirmative intention/goal

The guy who says, I am thankfull for all of the new job ooportunities I am recieiving through my positive action" will have a much better chance of leaving his lousy job for a better one he is worthy of won't he? he had to beleive he was worthy for a better one too, didn't he?

It's so simple it doesn't even seem worth mentioning does it? How come there are so many people bitching and complaining about life being crappy and feeling stuck, lost and hopeless? No one taught them this simple trick. Their parents didn't their teachers didn't their friends didn't.

They were bred to beleive that life just happens to you and life is not fair and some people have more and some have less, some are born lucky and some are born unlucky. That is just BULLSHIT.

Swami, what is the harm in others here wanting to empower people with beleiving in themselves and their own power to experience and manifest to the extent they dare to beleive and dream of what can be? Some times, it involves taking risks, but we'd still be like cave men if no did that.

Why do you speak up against people wanting to empower others? YES active energy MUST follow. Did someone in the past leave that out? If they did, Then I agree with you that beleif isn't enough. It's a starting place though, that's all.

Setting a tone and taking action still may not be enough as so many factors are involved. But so what if some fail or only meet their goals half way? What the hell else are we to do while waiting to die?

It's all one big game of destruction/construction and you are the builder of your life. We've been given all the tools for doing either. The world is full of people teaching us how to destroy but few teaching us how to construct.

Huh? That all people are not born with equal talents or opportunities is self-evident to this poster. That "life is not fair" is also evident. I have never married because of nothing that I have done. Three times I was ready and events intervened having NOTHING to do with my actions or outlook, that precluded a union that I have long desired. I believed and committed and so what? The grim reaper appeared in two of the cases. Where does the bullshit lie?

Because you have been blessed in certain areas does not mean that all of us have been.

I wrote in another thread here about how I havelearned that things are not always what they appear to be and that there is always something more behind them that changes your view.

For sure, geez I'm sorry, on the surface, it looks like you had bad luck and feel into the less then category. Maybe not.

It would take some time to look behind "this appearance" with you and see what we find that may change your feelings and outlook on this. I can PM you something later tonight. Don't give up, I have reason to beleive your day is dawning up the road. (That girl)  :heart:

As a semi-professional poker player, I know all about playing the hand one was dealt. However, those getting the best cards DO win the most money. Fairness had nothing to do with it.

i don't think so.. you can bluff, go over the top, mix up your tells, irregular actions, do all means nessecary to win the tournament..

look at gus hansen, one of the tops players of today. he will bet on nothing and still comes out on top.

its not what you got but how you play it...

95% of the poker played is limit, not pot-limit as Gus Hansen plays. Even so when you go all-in with JJ and your opponent has QQ, you are essentially fucked.

I do find it amusing though, that becaue you watch something on TV, you can tell more about it than one who has put some 12,000 hours on the green felt.

not only watch it. i live it. i play nearly everyday either online or with groups of people. and 9 times out of 10 by the end of teh night i have won. not because of the hand but how i play.
