Chris Reeve: "I am going to walk again!"
    #3337159 -

Editor's note: Granted this is an anecdote, but that seems to be a popular method of "evidence" on this forum.

Chris Reeve was outwardly as positive a person could be given his paralysis and prognosis. Did his affirmations and positive thinking as outlined in numerous previous threads enable him to take even a single step after his accident?

<Insert standard apology here about how it wasn't his fate; he contributed more to society staying paralyzed; he didn't truly believe; etc.>

Perserverance is not necessarily related to affirmations, prayer and/or positive/wishful thinking.

Do you give up on your friends after one try when you see them repeating destructive habits?

my question is, would christopher reeves have achieved more, lived a happier life, or had a more positive impact on the world if he had said 'i am doomed, my life is over, i shall never walk again?'

it is my oppinion that his positve thinking and affirmations gave him the energy, hope and determination to make a huge impact on the lives of others, to live more happily than other wise would have been possible, etc etc etc.

Maybe he didnt achieve the exact goal of his hope, but he came closer than if he had not had a positive attitude, Again i ask you 'when has a negative or hopeless attitute helped someone achieve anything but sadness and despair?'

that being said, is it not fully logical to embrace the opposite aproach and be positive and hopefull?

shoot for the stars, if you miss at least youll land on a cloud.

This is a moot point, swami, since the man is dead and can no longer even TRY to walk :smirk:

However in the time between his accident and his death, he DID make some minor progress with rehabilitation. In fact he DID walk nearly every day on a treadmill, though needed to be suspended with a harness. The fact that the man could even move his legs this soon after destroying his spinal cord is amazing. I seem to remember his doctors saying it would never happen...

And, swami, before you say it, you know that I'm not suggesting prayor or anything else is the cause of this. However his unwillingness to simply give up and accept his condition is MOST LIKELY what drove him to be able to move his muscles again - even if severely limited.

So here's a question: would he have ever regained this ability, even to the limited degree he did achieve, if he had said "i am doomed, my life is over, i shall never walk again"...personally I don't think so.

"Maybe he didn't achieve the exact goal of his hope, but he came closer than if he had not had a positive attitude"

Reeve's optimism and determination were unflagging. "There'll be a lot of nice years ahead", he said soon after the accident. "The only limits you have are those you put on yourself."

Doctors initially predicted that Reeve would never have any feeling or movement below his head. But his foundation's website, www.ChrisopherReeve.org said he had experienced a degree of recovery his doctors considered "remarkable".

Doctors credit Reeve with bringing neurological disease to the attention of the politicians and the public, as well as increasing the NIH budget that funds their research.

Although there is no known cure for paralysis, recent advances in medical science have enabled persons with this injury not only to survive, but to live long and productive lives.

The Christopher Reeve Paralysis foundation was formed in 1999 to boost collaboration between experts working on treatments for spinal cord damage.

Reeve may not have walked after the accident, but through his strength, courage, optimism, and perseverance great strides have been made and will continue to be made in progress with spinal cord injury treatment.

Not to mention, he made a positive inspiration of himself for others versus choosing to make a negative nusense of himself for others with a bad attitude towards having a good attitude.

Maybe his good attitude and positive beliefs ect. didn't get HIM walking again, but perhaps they paved the way for others in the future to be able to walk again who without his various contributions would not. It is the beggining of the end the day we loose hope. The world benefits from people who carry a torch of hope, a ray of light, to follow into the what can be.

Every time swam that you talk talk talk about people needing to accept YOUR truth of their own limitations and the limitations of YOUR reality, I hope they arn't listening.

Reeves is responsible for helping millions of others with nerve damage.

Oh, and no flaming in S&P.

So you are advocating non-acceptance of current reality? Isn't that contrary to many of the teachings presented here?

So here's a question: would he have ever regained this ability, even to the limited degree he did achieve, if he had said "i am doomed, my life is over, i shall never walk again"...personally I don't think so.
Your thinking does not make it so and is pure speculation. What we DO know is that what he affirmed did not come to pass; hardly an endorsement for the power of affirmations.

Not at all, but I think we can all agree that situations change over time. Accepting what is now does not mean you can't work for a different then.

What we DO know is that what he affirmed did not come to pass; hardly an endorsement for the power of affirmations.

He died fairly young, but in the few years he lived with his condition, he made remarkable progress towards his goal. A goal as large as his can't happen overnight, or even in a few years. His struggle was cut short.

I would say his progress is a strong endorsement for the power of dedication and hard work. After all, we aren't talking about a guy who said "I will walk again" and then proceeded to sit in his chair all day watching the tube.

He probably worked harder every day than most of us do

Totally tangential. His affirmation about walking did not manifest in reality.

Maybe his good attitude and positive beliefs ect. didn't get HIM walking again...
There is no MAYBE about it.

The world benefits from people who carry a torch of hope, a ray of light, to follow into the what can be.
More irrelevant blather. Did he or did he not walk unaided before his death as the picture that he held clearly in his mind?

Every time swam that you talk talk talk about people needing to accept YOUR truth of their own limitations and the limitations of YOUR reality, I hope they arn't listening.
What personal truth did I put forth? I made an observation about the inefficacy of affirmation to alter reality in this instance. Show me the line where I advocate limitations or are your once again imagining something not written?

He died fairly young,
Apparently he forgot to "affirm" a long enough life to reach his goal.

A goal as large as his can't happen overnight, or even in a few years.
Is this factual or are you exposing your own limiting belief?

I would say his progress is a strong endorsement for the power of dedication and hard work.
No disagreement here. That is what ALL progress is about.

After all, we aren't talking about a guy who said "I will walk again" and then proceeded to sit in his chair all day...
He did sit in his chair most of the day.

He probably worked harder every day than most of us do

"The only limits you have are those you put on yourself."
Seems to be a contradiction. As Chris never walked after the accident, then that was a self-imposed limitation?

www.ChrisopherReeve.org said he had experienced a degree of recovery his doctors considered "remarkable".
CR publicly and privately affirmed that he would walk again; not make great progress and almost get there.

The rest of the accolades have nothing to do with this thread.

When all is said and done, he was unable to mystically bring forth the internal picture that he held steadfastedly to.

Well like I said in my first post, I don't think his progress is the result of prayor or simple "mind over matter". He obviously worked VERY hard for his goal and the progress he made shows just how hard he worked.

Are you suggesting that just because he failed, everyone else should give up their goals? Is it pointless to work towards anything?

I really don't see what your point is. "Affirmation" doesn't mean you say you'll do something then not work towards it. His affirmation meant he had a goal, one that he worked towards.

Do you think deconstructing posts on the shroomery is easy work? The pay is certainly low.

You get paid?

Well first of all his name was Christopher Reeve, not Reeves.

Secondly, I don't recall him ever stating he would walk again as a result of his faith or positive affirmations;I do recall him saying he would walk as a result of future technological advances.
