holy scripture, volk epic, memic imprint, shared mythos...
said author elie weisel:
God made man because he loves stories.
(idle query: in the above quote, should the word "he" be written "He" or "he"? heh...)

Odin is the best archetype of a God there is.
Seriously, he is all about the shamanistic experiences and the quest for natural wisdom, let us all give an eye and drink of the Well of Rememberance and sit with two ravens by our shoulders and two wolves at our feet.
Peace.

back in the day, odin skyfather and some of the aesir would indeed walk amongst men... and his hanging from a tree to obtain the runes of power is a powerful archetype... and the whole norse cyclic view of the life: of the worlds of gods and of men, of death and rebirth, of great feasting in the halls of valhalla for the shield maidens and mighty warriors felled in battle on the side of the aesir against loki the traitor & fenris wolf & the vanir & frost giants & such... beautiful mythos for those fo us from the north... but, as thor himself once remarked to a young hippie chick in NYC who wished to worship him as thor odinsson, "our time to be worshipped has passed; now we are here to do our work which must be done" (or something to that effect, anyways...) well today is indeed odinsday, and tomorrow is thorsday, and following that is freyasday (or friggsday) hail thee & well met... ymmv...

I've been reading The Well of Rememberance by Ralph Metnzer, who I am sure you know as one of those acid experiementers from Harvard, along with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert, and it is about Norse mythology, especially Odin. It is very interesting, from what I have read so far, and gets into archetype and shamanism and etc. etc. etc....
Peace.

yeah we had metzner out for a weekend at atwood ski lodge (near akron/canton OH) for a winterstar symposium & he did his workshop on northern euro spirit stuff... sorta cool, actually... shucks, there's a book for kids called _children of odin_ & i'm sure there's norse mythlology info site on the web (& maybe some modern norse religious stuff - asteru, maybe?) (remember, angles, saxons, jutes, danes were all nordic/germanic/teutonic volk (there's still a place called "saxony" in deutschland); & today many an englishman is proud of his "anglo-saxon heritage"... what a crazy world...) (a bit more: the was an interesting article in "coevolution quarterly" magazine (now "whole earth review") which asserted that american culture is a viking culture... cool read)

"If there was something in the air If there was something in the wind If there was something in the trees or bushes That could be pronounced and once was overheard by animals, Let this Sacred Knowledge be returned to us again."
-------------------- "A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda
