Of course we have all had experience with this in the psychedelic state, I was wondering if any of you have got a good glimpse of it in the dream state or in normal consiousness. I got a glimpse of an archetype in my dream yesterday, so I looked up some tarot cards to try and find it. The closes card was the emporor, I read up on it, and it resembled what I need in my life right now.

I had a couple snakes in my dreams lately. What does that mean?

Well technically all dream imagery is archetypal. You take a basic pattern from the collective unconscious and wrap it with personal and cultural examples and you get a dream image.
I remember when I was around 10 years old I had this recurring dream where I was being chased/followed/stalked by an old man dressed all in black clothes and a black hat with black sunglasses. Sometimes I would see him in a reflection of something, then turn around and he wouldn't be there. other times other dream characters would turn into him. Very spooky stuff for a 10 year old.
Anyway, looking back at it that man was my Shadow. Jung tells us that a very important step in life is to confront your own Shadow. I sure couldn't do it when I was 10, and I'm having a pretty tough time of it even now. It took Jung around six years of isolation and depression before he was able to confront his Shadow. Painting helped him a lot, and building castles in the sand.

hi earth droid. may i ask what was the image in your dream that was archetypal and what is your interpretation of the emperor that enabled you to make the connection? also, which tarot cards are you using?
my take is the emperor contains tokens that indicate clear focused vision and intelligent use of the reasoning faculties are the skills to develop. thanks

I have had archetypal trips as well as dreams. I've had very life-like dreams in which I am cleansed with fire, also dreams where I confront Fear, which takes on many forms, usually that of a snake.
I really would be interested in reading a book by Jung... Anyone have a recommendation?
