but I'd gladly say to hell with the sex and rock and roll, at least bring the love back.

Anybody could hitchhike a ride back then with no paranoia. Today, I would not pick up anybody. Somehow the openess and love did get lost. That is the biggest tragedy.

It was a time of great promise that never fully materialized

I attribute a lot of that apathy and lack of real social action(s) to the rampant use of marijuana, it produced(for the most part) a generation of thinkers and talkers but relatively few do-ers. A generation too smug and complacent in it's seeming rebellion against parents, authority in general etc....

I cannot foresee a revolution being created in the future; the government has specialized in anti-revolution technology via subtle brainwashing, political party division, new improved riot-gear, new "anti-terrorist" laws, lots of bullshit. They're pretty much ready to go for dominant globalization, and people arent the wiser to their true intentions. This is because the ideology's of many peoples are fawked up almost beyond repair (a product of highly competitive capitalism). If a revolution were to emerge it would be due to a big catastrophe... a wake-up call/major threat on our current way of life. That very may well happen in the foreseeable future, peak-oil and all. I just dont believe it will be sparked by a single human.

What do you think?

BTW, I know pretty much all the most popular hippy bands from the 60's-70's and it'd be cool if you could mention some rockin underground bands that I could try to dig up?

Based on my own personal experience i don' think my generation(L8 60's early 70's) is in any position to critizise the Candy kids of today. While we didn't for the most part have access to the plethora of prescribed meds that appear to be prevalent today we more than compensated with copius pot/hash consumption, acid, psilocybin, MDA, PCP, STP etc

We also didn't generally have nearly the selection of drugs available as the ones growing up today do, especially online with the advent of the internet and numerous herb/psychotropic plant suppliers, research chemicals etc

I could summarize all this and say: Yes, we ha a lot of acid burnouts, i personally know 2 guys from high skoll athat are 51 years old and still living with their parents, btw the both of them still smoke weed everyday....

But i'm sure there's quite a few E kids that have done some serious damage to thir serotonin levels by doing E  too often :frown:

From my limited view, it was more open than the 50's, but you guys have it better today.

If I may...

Another "better" that we all have today is that there is some understanding of the historical presence of the psychedelic experience in human history. This was not a part of the 60's or 70's. For most people in those days, Leary, Alpert, Thompson, et al, the psychedelics were a brand spanking new thing to the human mind. Very few psychedelic explorers had any idea that this experience was not new. Very few understood the possibility that human beings had had a long history with psychoactive plants of all kinds in most parts of the world. The Wassons and McKenna, of course, are two glaring exceptions, to whom we owe a bunch. They were pioneers who took the psychedelic experience seriously and with considerable effort over many years did the hard work of uncovering what may turn out to be the most extraordinary "hidden treasure" one can discover as a human being in this life. Excuse the hyperbole, but there it is. And as McKenna said again and again, how they keep a lid on this stuff is perhaps an even greater mystery.

Another "better" we have today is this internet and the relative free-flow of information. We didn't have this back then. There were rumors and misinformation floating around with no reliable way to confirm or deny whether or not the information was even questionable. This was especially true if you didn't have a cool older brother or hipster uncle or whatever to whom you could turn for some real dope on the scene.

edit: to complete the above thought, the shroomery and erowid.org are a couple a pretty darn good anchors for people today who are exploring altered consciousness. There are many others.

We have realized the ideals of the 60's. They have been forged through the fires of the "real world" into something new and quite unimaginable 30 or 40 years ago. What this is is maybe something for historians to sort out over time. For now, we are it.

Throw in your towel(ie) or take up your MindFold?. The choice is ours.

A lot has been said about how the psychedelic/hippie revolution died out, but what can you say has changed in the way society functions before & after it? Are people more aware even though the utopia goal wasn't met, or are we back to square 1?

"I figure there are about 15 or so on these boards with maybe 4 or 5 on S&P. So if you have any questions about the '60s/'70s, the psychedelic era, Orange Sunshine, the potency of pot, The Doors, Civil Rights, Haight-Ashbury, anti-war protests or the original Star Trek, ask now while we are still kicking."

it confuses me that so many recent swami posts (like the oldest member around) seem to be in the wrong forum lately, This is S & P dude (not that i really care) but this is a general off topic conversation question, not a spiritual philosophical one.

Hard to do a before and after comparison when living in the middle of it. While psychedelics never went away, they did seem to "skip a generation" and are in a mild resurgence today. Yet it does seem that we are regressing. The USA is as divided today as when Nixon was in office and it severely saddens me to see more and more freedoms being dismantled in the name of safety. People in general are much more suspicious of one another than ever.

Seems progress is far from linear and we may "need" another really dark period to shock us once again. Too bad so few learn the lessons of history and we need to repeat them ad nauseum.

Did the revolution change the way society functions? Yes, for a while. When the mainstream could not fight it anymore, they merely absorbed it. (flash to today: Led Zeppelin music for a Cadillac commercial - LOL!) I see no long-term benefits other than the music, art and writing of the time (true of ANY most) period, which is a lot, but no real knowledge gained.

If we wanted to restrict this forum to strictly "spirituality" or "philosophy" topics (as the words are defined) then there would be a LOT of posts that would have to be moved on a regular basis.

Instead, we've chosen to allow "fringe" threads. Spirituality and Philosophy, to me, are both very wide-ranging subjects and quite open to individual interpretation. What you may consider to be "spirituality" may not be considered so by all others.

As an example are the "science" threads/posts that pop up quite often and, to be honest, which I absolutely LOVE reading and replying to. I consider most theoretical science to be a form of philosophy/spirituality, though as I said if we use the strict definition of those terms then theory does NOT belong in here. I happen to enjoy it, though, and I haven't see anyone complain before

I really thought with the actions of the Bush administration backfiring, we'd be in that dark period and more people would start questioning. But it seems as if we?re entering the dark period, and people are clinging more & more to their ideology for answers to the problems we face. Political, theological, or otherwise. I agree with progress not being linear, unlike technological progress, which currently is building one idea on top of another, social progress seems to make some people recoil in fear. The bigger problem comes when certain politicians exploit that fear and cause more of a division (and I realize technological progress isn?t always linear either, but recent technology has progressed in that manner).

A lot of the younger generation I've spoken to (and granted, I'm 24 and speaking about 18 year olds) have a better awareness of what's going on then many 30-60 year olds. So getting back to that non-linear idea of progress, it seems as if more people are understanding things, although at the same time, it seems as if just as many people are getting more pariniod. It's a strange time to be alive.

You gotta love how people have learned to spin personal exploration and anti-estabishmentism into commerical sentiments and ideology to be bought at your local Hot Topic store!
