Soaking WBS in 50% coffee
    #3211191 -

usually WBS is prepared by soaking for 24 hours, followed by a good rinse and drain. If the liquid being used to soak is 50% coffee, how should the technique differ? Should I be simmering the grains for a little bit too, or just the soak? thx

Soakinng in coffee wont do anything. The coffee isnt added to the substrate until you simmer the grains. Soaking is done to germinate bacterial endospores not add water or coffee to the substrate.

I think s/he is referring to caffeine experiments people have been doing. From all the pictures I've seen it appearantly does stimulate pinning in a big way. search the forums a little bit and you'll find references to it

actually hes pretty right. The main idea in soaking is to let endospores germinate. Simmering is done to add the water.

Yidaki, Hes right. Doesn't add any significant water to substrate during soaking. It does absorb some, i weighed pre and post soak to figure this out, but the majority of water gets in during the simmering.

The MAIN idea is to germinate endospores but it certainly does soak up lots of water during a 24 hour soak. You don't even need to weigh it, it puffs up noticably. Almost double IME. But then it almost doubles again during simmering for 20 minutes.

When doing coffee, soak in the 50% coffee, then don't drain and simmer in the same coffee water you soaked it in. Then PC for 2 hours instead of one at 15 PSI. This is what RR does and he's the one who created the whole coffee (not caffeine because nothing determined caffeine had anything to do with it and that it wasn't the nutes) thing.

Well, since I didnt' really get any answers about the question, I did it this way...

50% coffee 50% distilled water (I didn't buy it, my home water is all distilled) Soaked the grains for 24 hours, then simmered them in the coffee water. Drained the coffee and rinsed them VERY lightly with tap water to get any nasties off. They still smelled very much like coffee. Loaded into jars, pc'ed 15psi for one hour 45 minutes. They were inoculated with liquid mycelia from multispore and from cloned mushrooms. No growth yet, just inoced two days ago. I'll keep ya posted.
