Straw to WBS 50 Gallon Ratio>??????

My friend has been into the hobby off and on and his back  BUT he is stepping it up this time.  All or Nothing.  He successfully colonized 20 quart jars *some still on there way* and has 20 more following using wbs with the eq strain.  He will be using 50 GALLON RUBBERMAID CONTAINERS to spawn and grow from using the ENTIRE surface area. (this is his 2nd time using spawn 1st time using straw also first wbs)

NOW MY QUESTION IS>>>>>>>  1. If i use the normal 4 to 5 inches compacted straw substrate  HOW MANY QUART JARS DO YOU THINK I SHOULD USE?

  2.  EACH LAYER OF STRAW MEANS ENOUGH TO COVER SO YOU DONT SEE ANYTHING UNDERNEATH RIGHT??? like a quarter an inch layer of straw?

  3.  IT says 75 degree room temp in the tek.  Should i boost this up to 80 and the extra 2 to 4 degrees to perfect incubation temps come from the casing heat itself?  I wanna get it colonized asap because of what people say about contams and straw.        ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS WELCOMED GOOD  OR  BAD.    THANKS :thumbup:

1.) the optimal ratio for spawn is 5 to 1.

2.) I'm tired and don't understand your question...I've been up for like 3 fricken days...sorry!~

3.) 75 should be fine...yes the bulk substrate will give off some heat on its own.

Straw by itself will only give off one really good flush...or 2 flushes that are half way decent...IME.

You should consider using horse poo or cow manure with the straw...or using just horse poo.

Using 50 gallon rubbermaid containers is throwing all your cards into one hand.
You might want to use smaller containers...less chance of contams...IME.

Everything he said with two things:

The added stress to the throwing your cards into one hand...that tubs this big is going to cause you IMMENSE problems. Take it from someone with a dozen straw tubs 1'x2' going. Stick with 1x1 or 1x2 containers. Your REALLY looking for problems.

And for your number 2 question...you want to layer the straw and WBS as thinly as you can, the more layers and the thinner, the better..usually 1/4" straw on top of a thin layer of spawn.

Im gonna case with the rubbermaid 18 gallon containers then. And the poop im alittle leary about i would mess up my other attempts by the wrong water ratio EITHER TO WET with tons of abhorts or TO DRY with them growing from the sides. How exactly do you scat and road make sure your poo has the right amount of water content???

mix around it large bowl w/ water, pour off excess and (hopefully wearing gloves) you can feel for proper water content

it should, if squeezed, drip a few drops out and have a damp soil-like consistency, IIRC
