Pretty orange mushrooms

Hi,

I'm not looking for an ID here, but if anyone recognises them, I wouldn't mind knowing what they are.

If anyone's interested, I can go and pick some of them and do some spore prints, they're about a kilometre from my house.

I found them in a conifer woods, most of them were growing out of (recently felled) tree stumps. I just posted the pics here because I thought they were pretty :smile:

I thought this one showed the gills well:


There were dozens of these at different stages of growth within about a 30 metre square.

To me, those resemble Gymnopilus Spectabilis. Wait for a moderator to be sure.

The spore print should be a very rusty orange - reminiscent of the cap color.

Please do not "eat them and see." Get a positive ID before you eat any mushroom.

DO NOT EAT THEM. Never tell someone to eat a mushroom that is unidentified :thumbdown:....totally not cool, they could end up dead...if you want a positive ID get a sporeprint and try to make a best description as you can and wait for a mod to come around...

I wouldn't dream of eating them without doing all I can to identify them.

I'm back now with two mature ones & two that the caps have just opened.

I've cut the stems off and have just started some spore prints.

In the meantime I'll upload some pictures of the habitat & write up the descriptions.

I'm not sure about spectabilis, the fibrils on the caps look different than what I've seen.

All Gyms have rusty orange spores, so that's not going to help narrow it down to species.

Three important Questions:

1) What do they smell like? (active Gyms have a very distinct smell, like fruit.)

2) What do they taste like? (take a small piece, chew it, then spit it out and rinse your mouth with water, is it bitter?)

3)Is there any blue or green coloration where they have been handled? If this is present it will be most obvious on the babies.

    The smell isn't so sweet, more a sort of average earthy/ field mushroom smell.

2) What do they taste like? (take a small piece, chew it, then spit it out and rinse your mouth with water, is it bitter?)

    I Haven't got the courage for this one yet :smile:

3) Is there any blue or green coloration where they have been handled? If this is present it will be most obvious on the babies.

    No, there's no bruising whatsoever. I have been gentle with them so far though (except for cutting them).

Official answers:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)

    Location: New Forest, Hampshire, UK (south coast).
    Weather: 18C max - 10C min, lots of rain over the last couple of days, fairly dry, some showers before that (this is Britain we're talking about!).
    Habitat: In a conifer woods (pine?) with some deciduous trees on outskirts. Most growing from newly felled conifers. Some growing in needle leaf litter. Ground fairly damp. Elavation 70 meters. See pics.

b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)

    Crowded gills that clumped together on one when it was very wet. Gills are deep orange becoming more yellow as they dry. Seem to be attached to the stem.

c. Measurements of cap and stem.

    (Stems cut near base).

    Mature - cap 14cm, stem 7.5cm.
    Cap just opened - cap 6cm, stem 5cm.

d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)

    Stems are lighter orange than caps, becoming almost yellow as they dry. Fairly thick & dense, with orange strands on surface. Inside they are lighter, almost tan. A ring has been left as the cap has broken away from the stem.

e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)

    Retaining orange colour as they dry. They have pretty concentric darker orange scales on them, almost look hairy. The young ones are dome shaped. One of the mature ones is slightly concave, one slightly convex towards the base, otherwise both are fairly flat. On mature ones the edges curve steeply down, becoming quite raggedy at the ends. Young ones are a perfect dome shape.

f. Spore print color (very important!)

    Rusty brown.

g. Color that the mushroom bruises

    No bruising to be seen.

h. Scent of mushroom

    They smell very like shop bought field mushrooms. Nothing distinctive.

These weren't so successful, they've been left for 2.5 hours, I'll do some more overnight. They might have been a bit too damp.

Those really do look like Big Laughing Gyms.

The lack of blue bruising is consistent with G. spectabilis.

The habitat is right.

Sometimes the smell is not so distinct, but they will always taste very bitter.

The fibrils on the cap are more distinct than on the ones I find here in Ohio, but they are still consistent with descriptions in the field guides. This difference is probably just a variation within the species.

Soggy mushrooms need to dry out a little before they drop spores. If you let them set overnight you should have a heavy spore print in the morning. From what you have so far, the color looks right, but it would be a good idea to wait for a heavier print to be sure it really is rusty orange (Gymnopilus), and not cinnamon brown which would indicate Pholiota. From the photos it appears that you have Gyms and not Pholiotas, but better safe than sorry.

The taste test (very bitter) would also rule out Pholiota, but not other species of Gymnopilus. This test will be required if you plan to eat them. Btw I recommend tea, these mushrooms taste horrible and the indigestible flesh can cause diarrhea. The tea is also very bitter but you can take it in shots and chase it with water. I've never experienced gastric problems from the tea.

All that being said, if the spore prints turn out rusty orange, and the flavor is bitter, then you have Big Laughing Gyms. I don't know if they are active though; I've read that this species is inconsistantly active and varies in potency from region to region.

GG is our resident Gymnopilus expert so you may want to wait for his opinion, but it looks to me like youv'e got the goods.:)

I've done a taste test on both a mature and a young, I put a small piece on my tongue for about 30 secs. At first there was a pleasant salad taste, but the bitterness became more insidious as time went on. It wasn't immediately bitter like ear wax (sorry, couldn't think of a better example of bitter!). The taste of both was the same.

The spore prints look a lot better this morning. I had to take the pictures under fluorescent light, I adjusted the white balance on the camera, and these look fairly accurate, but not as good as daylight.

There might have been a slight draft on this mature one, still, it looks groovy:

Sorry to go on about this, but I've been looking through some books and some doubts have entered my mind.

The mushrooms I've found also bear a striking resemblance to the Cortinarius family, and I'm particularly worried that they might be Cortinarius Speciosissimus (Foxy-orange web cap), which I've read can cause kidney failure after two weeks (a long time to wait if there's no trip!). Mainly wondering if this species grows in the states, as I've read in Google searches that there are no deadly lookalikes in the various posters' areas.

The main differences (as far as I can make out), are that the Gymnopilus has a very bitter taste and that the scales on the cap become smooth as it gets larger on the Cortinarius Speciosissimus. Doing a taste test of my mushrooms, I would say they are bitter, but not very bitter just interestingly bitter (maybe this gets worse if you actually eat them?), I do have a savoury palate. To their favour, my mushrooms scales are possibly more pronounced on the mature specimens.

I've read that it's possible to do a test with ammonia on the caps, and that Gymnopilus Spectabilis should go 'blackish', I can't find any information about the colour Cortinarius Speciosissimus should go, could anybody confirm this? If this is the case, anybody know of an easy way for me to get hold of ammonia?

Bearing in mind I don't have access to a microscope, are there any other definitive tests I might be able to do?

I have been known to be paranoid before now :wink:

There is ammonia in many houshold cleaners. I think windex has ammonia in it.

being paranoid is good.

You should be able to buy just stright up ammoina(well, watered down) at the grocery stores. It's used for cleaning things.

It's now purely in the interest of science, seeing as the libs have started popping up :smile:

Still, I am interested in the laughing aspects of these, I'm wondering if there's some un-isolated chemical that gives them these powers. I do like a good laugh!

Your caution is prudent. You should never consume a mushroom if you are not 100%sure that it is safe. I will be interested to hear the results of the ammonia test.

The reason why I was not concerned about deadly Corts is because of the habitat. Gymnopilus species are wood decomposers which fruit directly from wood: logs, stumps, chips, or dead buried roots. Deadly Corts grow on the ground, forming mycorrhizal relationships with live trees and fruit from their roots. The fact that your mushrooms were growing directly from a wood substrate rules out Cortinarius.

I have never found a deadly cort, and to my knowledge they are not reported from Ohio, West Virginia, or Pennsylvania where I hunt. I have only seen them in books.

If I had Liberty Caps growing in my neck of the woods I wouldn't consume Gyms either. Your scientific curiosity is commendable.

I hadn't considered your point about the medium the two mushrooms grow in (really should read a bit more before I jump on the keyboard!). As you say though, the test will be interesting.

I sort of panicked when I saw kidney failure, my Dad was on dialysis for 10 years before he found a donor, after seeing what misery it causes, it doesn't bear thinking about bring that down on myself.
