It is interesting to note that some plants contain serotonin...

Do you just make this stuff up as you go? Name just one plant that contains serotonin.

Even 2,000 out of 200,000 species is merely one percent.A tiny fraction of a population.

BTW Apples, cherries and other fruits contain cyanide.

That's 2000 species that contain high concentrations of hydrogen cyanide or prussic acid. That's only a small fraction of poisonious plants.

So, yep, plants can be good or bad for people, who would have though?

And I wonder why?

Wait that's what this thread is about...weird.

"Evolutionarily, serotonin existed in plants even before the appearance of animals."
http://www.neurotransmitter.net/serotonin.html

"For the first time natural serotonin was obtained in 1959 from bark of sea-buckthorn. The quantity of serotonin in sea-buckhorn bark fluctuates from 0,3% up to 0,4% what is much more than its quantity in the bark of other plants. Serotonin of a vegetative origin is much purer than synthetic and was obtained as crystalline chlorine-hydrate, whereas artificial serotonin is being obtained as composition containing creatin and sulfuric acid or composition containing adipin acid."
http://www.hemfarm.com/e_serotonin.shtml

"Recent findings in my laboratory demonstrated the presence of melatonin and serotonin at relatively high levels in several medicinal plant species including St. John's wort, feverfew and Huang-qin."

The stinging nettle.

It is a very common herb used in homeopathy that contains serotonin.

Sea-buckhorn bark contains 0.3% to 0.4% serotonin.

Aristolochia plants are believed to contain serotonin.

I've also read a little over a dozen plants contain serotonin but I have not done extensive research into to know all the known plants that contain serotonin.

Modern medical science and some other sciences stemmed from herbal medicine/homeopathy and alchemy.

Alchemy relied on plants often enough and herbal medicine/homeopathy exclusively relies on plants.

Most if not all medicine today are either extracted from plants and fungi or they copied the natural chemical structures often found in plants.

All of the first medicines came from plant extractions.

Sorry swami but way wrong again.

A concentrated plant extraction is in no way related to homeopathy.

Chemical duplication of plant molecules is on no way related to homeopathy.

I looked up Homeopathy.Sorry I was thinking herbal medicine.Around here herbal medicine is also called homeopathy. There isnt a distinction made.I was referring to herbal medicine though.Which IS seperate from homeopathy and not very different and herbal medicine IS related to plant extractions and chemical duplication of plant molecules.Sorry for the miscommunication.

Homeopathy:
A system for treating disease based on the administration of minute doses of a drug that in massive amounts produces symptoms in healthy individuals similar to those of the disease itself.

Herbal Medicine:
The study or use of medicinal herbs to prevent and treat diseases and ailments or to promote health and healing.
A drug or preparation made from a plant or plants and used for any of such purposes.

unenlightened one,
terrence mckenna is the wrong person to learn about evolution from.
try darwin. or use a more appropriate word to your understanding.
evolution is what we call the results of a complex layered history of lifeforms - it is beautiful and worth study, and it helps to understand the relatedness of long dead ancestors.
you need to study it to talk about it authoritatively, but it seems you want to turn it into something else than what it is.
evolution is not a purposed thing.

the purpose life has is to survive.

shit happens and some forms cease to breed and others continue.
the stuff that happens affecting life is not purposed it is chaotic and concerted. too many angles would need to be computed to influence something like evolution - or even history "on purpose".

you have to make some space for everything else (like infinity) to proceed in its own direction without projecting any purpose on it.

I never said about anything about terrence mckenna and evolution.

I am familiar with darwinism.I wasnt speaking about it authoritatively.I was throwing ideas out there and pondering.

I wasnt really getting too into evolution either.

Your post doesnt seem to relate to anything said here really.

And the purpose of living/survival is purpose which makes it not random.

It's hard to know the why for almost anything, such as chems in plant receptors binding to human neurotranny receptors.  We can only speculate.  My guess?  Uh...(hits the bong), because God is a hippy.

UnenlightenedOne ;
there is no why to this.
just go with it.
it's wonderful.

thanks for throwing it out there.
sorry if I misunderstood you,
things got this way over millions of years of the dance
and it does not require any purpose whatever.

This whole post is speculation. Most if not all my posts are speculation.I like to throw around ideas and see what others think about topics I feel are important or worth discussing.I respect alot of member's views here.I usually dont try to accomplish anything rather than friendly discussion here.

Im not looking for a why really.Just friendly discussion of views. The why doesnt even really matter.

Misunderstanding is bound to occur.I expect some misunderstanding with every topic.

I think there are a small number of plants that fit category A.

But I think most plants with receptor friendly chemicals got them without any 'intentional' evolutionary cause.

"Without intent, there is no purpose, without purpose, there is no reason. If there is not intent of evolution there would be no evolution. There wouldnt be a need for it."

"I believe all things have reason, intent and purpose.I find it extremely hard to believe anything is random or doesnt have a purpose."

Why is that so hard to believe? What about something that has no purpose outside of itself? Like music or dance, which has no purpose outside of itself- the point of music being the music, the point of dance being the dance itself. Mere purposeless play. Applying a purpose to it makes it a chore. You can say the same thing about life.

Evolution has no real direction or purpose other then to produce an organism capable of surviving in its future environment.

One who says something is without purpose must look deeper still.

There are so many anthropology/socialogy reports/documents on dance and the purpose it serves.Dance serves to attract mates and has always had this main purpose.Although some dance is also ritual.

Music most definitely has purpose. Its purpose is to alter/affect our emotions and mind and to set a certain mood. This is why we get sad when sad music plays and energetic when fast, upbeat music plays like techno and etc.

If you understand and really comtemplate most of what he says it is quite brilliant IMO.However the average person doesnt really understand I've learned.Terrence most definitely wasnt a nut.Without terrence also there would be no P. Cubensis AKA Stropharia Cubensis as it was when he brought it back to the US and first cultivated it.He also paved the way for the tolerance of open discussion of drugs. He changed the face of america in regard to drugs.

Some of his theories are out there, however he was just speculating and didnt say well "This IS how it is."

If life is purposeless, why do you live it?
