What's wrong, you're not looking forward to war against Iran, greater debt, military conscription and increased numbers of people developing an all consuming hatred for Americans and the U.S. (read: 'more terrorists')?

Annapurna1 refers to one who supports individual freedom (a Capitalist or Libertarian, for example) as a "neocon". The "con" part is a contraction of "conservative".

It stands to reason therefore that one against individual freedom (a Lefty or Libbie, for example) could be referred to as a "neocom", where the "com" is a contraction of "communist".

Whoa there partner. Being liberal is not about less freedoms. It's not even about big government necessarily. I think you're confusing democrats, liberals, socialists and communists. Or something. Take me, I'm fiscally conservative but very socially liberal.

I thought so, I just wasn't sure if it was a new term being thrown around by the pundits, or just a witty catch phrase.

Sigh. If by that you mean "classical liberal" in the mode of the Founding Fathers, you are correct. But in today's America, "Liberal" has for at least half a century (if not more) referred to the Democrat type. I had thought the juxtaposition of "Lefty" with "Libbie" had made it clear which definition of Libbie I referred to.

Take me, I'm fiscally conservative but very socially liberal.

So you would identify yourself more closely with a Laissez-faire Capitalist or a Libertarian viewpoint than with the current American Democrat viewpoint? If so, you are neither a "Lefty" nor a "Libbie" and therefore not a neocom.

Definitely not laissez-faire. While I"m not sure the current union situation is the best solution, workers definitely need to be protected, especially in a capitalistic society. I'm not libertarian either, I don't believe in the "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" garbage, nor do I think government should have absolutely no involvement.

Anyway, NeoCon, refers to the "new conservatives". Most typically this refers to the elite upper class, typically white. They want to protect (conserve) their way of life. Understandable, but under the near-epithetical neocon umbrella it typically means doing so at the expense of others. This I do not agree with either. Neocons for example would support the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Ambiguous and hypocritical adherance and insistance on religious and moral values also play a big part in it. In any case, a lot of times people use neocon as an insult, with all the conspiracy and extremist baggage attached.

As for NeoCom, I've not heard that before but it stands to reason it is just a reversal targetting a different group (communists I guess) for much the same reason, to provide an easy hateful label. Sadly liberal also gets used as a "dirty" word by some rabid people.

*shrug* They're all just labels and only fit as well as the person using them and the person they're being applied to allow them.

I'm not sure if they're willing to stick their necks out like that yet. It seems they have their hands full with Palestinian terrorist. If they actually took a preemptive action against a "sovereign" muslim nation, I could only imagine the jihadists.

edit: took a preemptive, not to

What makes you think Laissez-faire Capitalists object to unions? We don't. We do object to compulsory union membership, of course.

I'm not libertarian either, I don't believe in the "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" garbage...

Unsure what you mean by that.

... nor do I think government should have absolutely no involvement.

No involvement in what?

Anyway, NeoCon, refers to the "new conservatives".

Actually, no it doesn't. It refers to those who used to be Lefties but abandoned Leftie ideology at some point.

As for NeoCom, I've not heard that before but it stands to reason it is just a reversal targetting a different group (communists I guess) for much the same reason, to provide an easy hateful label.

I made it up as a response to Annapurna1's incessant misuse of the term "neocon". For all I know someone else has used it before I dreamed it up, but I have yet to see anyone use it other than myself. It seems so obvious a rejoinder that I can't believe I'm the first to use it. If I am I'll file for a copyright.

Whoops! Seems a real NeoCon, David Horowitz, had the idea before me: http://www.frontpagemag.com/articles/Printable.asp?ID=7590

I knew it was too obvious not to have been thought of by others. No copyright for me.

I'd be very surprised were that to turn out to be true.

After all.... they're still bitching about a legally won, yet somehow magically "stolen" election years later.
