I have to say, this is one of the few things Bush has done which I applaud him for. Still not nearly good enough to win my vote, though.

Bush had nothing to do with it. The bill was enacted by Congress, Congress could have renewed it, they declined to do so. Bush can take no credit for it.

True, but at least they saw the error of their ways.

Wasn't it just a Bill that expired in the first place.

Correct me if I'm wrong, this isn't my field.

Ya, but they had the good sense not to renew it. I mean, don't get me wrong--they were assholes for passing it in the first place, but their decision not to renew it was a wise one. I hope they renew the Bill of Rights, which seems to have expired.

that's all well and good, but doesn't cali still have an assault
weapons ban on the state level that keeps me from being
able to purchase this particular rifle as well as any clip that
holds more than 2 fucking bullets?

I don't know, I don't live in California. If it does, move.

Yes, California still does have the moronic law. The maximum magazine size is limited to 10 rounds and the rifle cannot accept a detachable magazine. California's law is one reason for my picking the Browning BAR ShortTrac in my thread The Second Amendment vs. The Jihadists.

hah. i've been looking at that very rifle.

$1100... whew that's a lot of money to spend on a rifle.

i've got some friends in the military. they don't speak very fondly of the M-16 and its variants. they say that the .223 round is a little anemic and that the M-16 design just ain't robust enough.

i'd get one if i could afford it but when i do buy a rifle, it's gonna be a mini-30.

right now i've got only one firearm. it's a cheapo 20 gauge breach loader... cost about 80 bucks. it's alright for sporting clays, which is all i really need a gun for right now.

when i get my own place i'll probably start buying some arms. a decent pump 12 gauge, a 1911, and a mini-30 are on the list. i'd like an AK (SAR-1 i guess) too.

to the non-gun nuts... try going shooting sometime if you can. it's not bad. sporting clays are a lot of fun and long range rifle shooting is very... centering.. almost meditative. give it a shot.

Actually, meditation through prone smallbore shooting?  yeah that was a blast.  I learned to actually stop my heart from beating for 10-12 second intervals about once a minute or so.  That's 10 seconds with no breathing, no heartbeat, no blood moving..  about as close to dead as you can get and not be, well dead.  Very interesting

California sucks, no decent person should live there anyway, I'd say.  Same with New Jersey.  The feelie-good please-take-my-rights-away jerkbags seem to have flocked to both states in extreme numbers.

Remember folks, you can also buy pistols with mags that hold more than 10 now   so if you're a 9mm fan, you can get a 16-rounder much cheaper whee.
the whole magazine-limit thing was the only real non-cosmetic part of the bill, and I'm pretty sure it was just a reach-around to manufactorers.  There was a deadline, you see, and anything made before that could still be sold..    but was sold at about three times normal price because of "limited supply".  blah.

I don't think the government has a place to tell me what i can and cannot own. I think this falls under "arms" under our constituion, and have no problem with it's legalization.

But morally, i oppose personal ownership of weapons. I would consider myself a pacifist. I don't need the gov't to regulate my morality, just enforce laws and punish people for crimes.
