Looking for classical musical recommendations
    #3065741 - 08/29/04 05:55 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

How do you pick out classical music? They have like 50 orchestra's doing the same symphonies, anyone know which ones are good and which ones should be avoided? What are some good piece's? I wanted to pick up some albums the other day but was completely overwhelmed. Please help.

I have the same damn problem. I love darker, emotional stuff. With tons of rises, peaks and falls.. but I can never seem to find quite what im looking for.

Hm, I was hoping you could help more, I've seen you mention your taste for darker classical music. I guess I'll probably end up in there with the head phone dealys for hours trying to find what I am looking for.

Another problem is remembering what the hell I liked, it's pretty hard to remember something like "Concerto Grosso In B Minor, Op. 3 No. 10: I Allergro I" when you know dick about music.

Listen to your local NPR station and if you hear something you like (but missed the announcement of what the piece is) call them up and ask them. And then ask for some other recommendations. I've done that a few times and they enjoy talking with listeners.

mndfreeze: try Carl Orff. His most famous piece is Carmina Burana... you'll recognize the main theme right away, it's used in movie trailers all the time. There is a lot more to it than the intro thoguh.

The only classical song I know the name of is Canon by Johann Pachelbel I think.. It's only like 4 or 5 minutes long.. But emotional.

I think a lot of ppl use it for weddings..

Probably the only group more anal than Phishheads in how they dissect songs/arrangements/performances/recordings are the people who are way into classical music. Good luck!

Wagner, pre-Parsifal, is classical music at its best, I'd say.

I also really like Grieg...

but classical music never really did it for me, when it comes to instrumental music, I prefer jazz

Bela Bartok is considered the darkest composers ever. Claude Debussy is considered quite evil as well.
I first heard of these guys while reading 'The Encyclopedia of Hell'.
I have a friend that plays in a symphony that I asked for more info on these guys. He confirmed they are quite dark and moody. Though he did say some of Bartok's stuff can be atonal at times.

I'm a huge fan of classical music, here's a CD I gave to a friend of mine who was wanting to get a good start on classical music as he had no idea where to start.

The Top 100 Masterpieces of Classical Music, Vol. 6-10

This compilation has a lot of the best classical music ever made, my personal favorite happens to be Rodrigo's classical guitar music, its awesome stuff.

I'll give your request some thought as I also enjoy darker classical music, the happy high tempo is not the kind I enjoy most, still good but not as good as the more profound music that is out there

Check out also Amazon's beginners guide to Classical music, its very usefull.

Hey thanks everyone, I'm at amazon looking around right now, just listening to some clips here and there, I really enjoyed the Bela Bartok so far.

That guide is pretty helpful, thanks a million!
