Is classical music good for your brain?
    #1459603 - 04/15/03 08:25 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

They say that it's good for babies to listen to classical music while in the womb. I don't know exactly how it improves the babies brain, but supposidly it does.

My question is, is it good for the brain of an adult to play classical music as you go to sleep, or while you're in a highly suggestable state such as a psychedelic experience?

Well it wont hurt but as for improving brain function no not in an adult beacuse an adults brain isnt developing like a babies is.And as for babies and classical music theres no proven evidence that says it work but supposedlly it improves cognitive function i think.

peace,

When I fly (on an airplane ) I usually listen to the classical music station. It always seems to soothe me big time!
I think that while enhanced on something psychedelic it would stimulate my brain just because I find classical music VERY intense, sometimes it dark and scary and sometimes it uplifting and soo beautiful, but I have no idea if it would help improve my brain???

I really like classical music. Danse Macbre or whatever is probably my favorite. Songs like Aquarium are great for hangovers.

The last time I did DXM me and my friends started to have "sophisticated" conversations while we had classical music playing..

When i was in middle school i had this english teacher that always played classical music during test cus i guess it was proven to help stimulate brain function and get better scores on tests.

I think it has to do with the complexity of the music, which is why I suspect jazz is much better for your brain.

Some jazz is. Listen to some Charlie Parker or Dizzy Galespie(sp?) or any of that Bebop stuff. It's quite complex. However, it's not as soothing as classical music.

Baroque Classical, more specifically, is the form usually considered to enhance brain functioning and other such claims. The word baroque means deformed. Baroque music and composers like Bach broke alot of the rules of orthodox composition. One of the characteristics of baroque is the emphasis placed on dissonance. Baroque music worked with the themes of human suffering and triumph. Composers were not expressing their own emotions, but the full range of the human experience.
Another characteristic of Baroque was sustaining bass parts or Basso Continuo. Along this same idea, Baroque was more free flowing than previous and latter forms of Classical. I think its possible that this is why Baroque is believed to stimulate creativity. Baroque music uses extended phrasing and very few cadences. A cadence, if your not versed in theory, is a pause in music created by rhythmic phrasing and the use of particular intervals. Think of "twinkle Twinkle Little Star": || Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (half cadnece), How i wonder what you are (Perfect Cadence) || repeated phrase || etc....
Baroque just flows with very few pauses and i suppose this could help stimulate a free flowing and creative thought process.
