Quick question about lava rock instead of perlite...
    #2998615 - 08/13/04 02:14 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

If I follow the basic tek here

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7919/pag/2 , then what if I use the little round red planting rocks instead of perlite? Read this...

Get enough perlite to make at least 1" (2.5 cm) thick layer on the bottom of the fruiting chamber, and put it into a colander, strainer, or cloth enclosure that it can?t slip out of. Wet it thoroughly with normal tap water, and let the water drain out. Then move the perlite into the fruiting chamber and smooth out the surface.

Do I still just wet the lava rock, or do I put some in and put water in the bottom of the chamber?

Lava rock will wick moisture upward due to capillary action due to all the small pockets in them - similar to how geolite works. So wash the rocks to get rid of as much dust as you can, place them in your fruiting chamber probably a little bit deeper of a layer than suggested in the perlite instructions, and add an inch or so of water/H2O2 solution to the bottom. Basically follow that section of the Poor Mans Pod instructions from Magash but replace geolite with lavarox. If you use an air pump and airwand/airstones like the PMP suggests you may even be able to avoid having to spray and fan for relative humidity and fresh air exchange.
