Please help w/3 quick questions
    #423670 - 10/12/01 07:11 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

1) How deep should the perlite be to humidify a 10 gal. aquarium w/ constant air exchange?

2) How long shoul it take jars of rye to be ready to case after all visible surface is covered w/ mycelium?

3) If there is enough light for me to see is this enough light to slow down colonization?

Thanks alot for your help!!

sorry dude, watch out for those small abhorts, they're killer.

1) A pan of perlite about 10"x10" with 1 1/2" will do it. Just enough water to see small puddles forming in perlite. If too much humidity just reduce size of perlite exposure (5"x5")

2) This one gave me the chuckle. After jars are fully colonized it takes about 3 mins to case. 4-7 days with no light 85f. remove tin foil or whatever and expose to light at least 4 hours/day. Start fanning. Reduce temps to room temp 72-78 will be fine.

3) This one gave an even better chuckle. What the hell do you mean? For light, if you can see your casing this is enough light. Be careful with the light source, you do not want to overheat your casing. Colonization of the casing layer will slow down when you reduce your temps. It will take about 7 days before you see pins. 7 days later .... vrooom.

Sorry again about the chuckles, watch out for abhorts, they're the mean ones.
PM me if you have any further questions.

Thanks man sorry about the flame. I'm kinda cranky in the morning. I guess I didnt explain my questions clear enough.

2) After I can see mycelium on all visible from the outside sides of my jar how long should I wait to make shure the grain in the middle of the jars is colonized as well?

3) I have my jars in a cooler w/ fishtank heater and I have to keep the cooler lid cracked open about 1and 1/2 inches so I dont get water droping on my filter disks. They are in a closet w/ sliding doors that is dark but not completely. If I stand in the closet w/the doors shut there is enough light to see my jars in the cooler if I look close. Is this enough light to slow down colonization in my jars?

2) Forget about the grain in the middle of the jar. It may not be fully colonized but it won't matter. Just be sterile, when you case it will become colonized.

3) Screw the light thing. They will still colonize in full light, they will just invitro pin on you. You have them dark enough. Case those babies!
