I think I might have bacterial contam, but this is based almost entirely on smell, and I am absolutely not qualified to make that assessment. I mixed this box about a week ago, and there is no visual indication of anything but mycelium growing. I'm not sure how exactly to describe the smell; I thought it was vaguely "sour" but I smeared a pH test strip around in there and it looks like it's still very close to neutral, so sour is maybe not the right word.

All I can say for sure is that it smells different from the other boxes, but of course it does because this is the one box that has manure in it, and the others only have coir/verm. So I don't have a useful side-by-side comparison to make.

Supposing I just let it ride until I see some visual indication of a problem, would there be any risk to other nearby boxes? I mean bacteria don't create billions of airborne spores like mold does, so it should stay contained in this one box, right?

Bacteria will not jump to other tubs. You're probably just smelling the poopoo :cuteshit:

Who's rockin smallish sealable spawn bags instead of jars? The large unicorn bags are not for me, I think. Been trying the 14T bag (5x8x20 ish) and they're too big. Floppy. But I see this 4T (4x3x18) and that seems a lot more manageable.



Who's team spawn bag? 3T? 4T? other?

I ran a bunch of 4T couple years ago after doing a lot of bigger bags I really appreciated the size, donโ€™t remember any drawbacks personally

I don't recommend hydrating grains with LC. Hydrating is something that should be done before the PC cycle.

The mycelium won't say no to drier grains... just slower because they have to work harder.

What makes you think less air exchange is better?

i dont mean less air exchange i mean enough air exchange for the mycelium but not too much so that the grains dry out too quick..

i do thius expiriment with another lc injection next time i do work earlyer i do a mistake maybe but i will test it with another shoot maybe it work if not i start new  have 2 of 4 jars looks good

Yeah... I haven't heard about grains drying out from too much FAE.

All LC is suspect. Why would you risk adding contams if mycelium is still colonizing grains?

Anyone got the best writeup for making SHIP lids? I have some but I never made them, i think mine are 20mm? I guess I need heat resistant RTV silicone to keep it in place?

But fairly straightforward, either make the ship yourself with a dollop of rtv on either side or if you have premade drill a hole that your ship can fit over/into and rtv it in place

Since I have the SHIPs ill try the proper way. But simple RTV on both sides seems nice.


Is the consensus that the black jar lids, Ball brand, are the way to go nowadays compared to any other pp5 despite the higher price? I still rock some old white plastic ones, unmodified, and some knock off brand ones as well, although those are a bit more of a pain in the ass.

I would also not put them together, left one looks sketchier than the right one. Can you separate them into 2 shoeboxes?

The one on the left looks a bit bacterial. It's not too bad, but I wouldn't suggest mixing the two jars together into one tub. You'll probably have better success keeping them separate

One on the right maybe but like, it would suck to wait so long for another day or two getting fully covered grains.

How big are those jars? The standard shoebox size is 6L. Those 3L ones will definitely work, but I don't think they will have enough space to fruit. If you put them into a larger tub after, that'll be fine.

I use the AZOITA brand. 24 for 14USD. Back in the day I saw some reviews on other knockoffs that say they melted in the pressure cooker, but these ones didn't seem to have that problem and have been nothing but good to me. I run them without the silicone ring, which seals far too well and makes them impossible to open.

I have been meaning to do a Lid Tek thread, today is the day i guess, gonna make that.

I have one uniqueish secret for crispy lids: Put the RTV silicone in a slip tip syringe body (by first removing the plunger). This will allow you to lay a thin and precise bead around the SHIP hole that is very aesthetic once locked in.


Stepped drill bit is also very helpful for not cracking them. As is supporting from the back with something else while drilling so the surface isn't arcing too far / stressed.

@huskies fwiw ive used rando colored amazon lids to no detriment, if itโ€™s not a hassle just go with whatever and do a return if they get melty but Iโ€™m a refund whore. I WILL take the time to take that shit back to ups with a label
