I know someone who does this with woodlovers my understanding is grains age and decay quicker so you end up with contams though I have yet to try with grains it does work with woodlovers

Because coir lacks any nutrients to supply the mycelium:mushroom2: it's purpose is to supply the spawn with water

Computer secured, again, after a brief struggle - he says 'thank you'.

Will almost always end in mold the switch back from tertiary to vegetative mycelium is far more tricky from substrates especially when they have run out of gas , a huge bonus boost of grain to.bulk is the lower nutrition in the bulk substrate, to go from lower to low sucks not to.mention the amount of dead mycelium which is quick mold food , if just adding more food was the answer we'd be paying 30 cents a lb for our grocery store mushrooms instead of 15 dollars  a lb

Not all mushrooms are difficult though button mushrooms sold at stores are a little more difficult from my understanding of it requiring certain bacteria to fruit and the requirement of pasteurizing substrate to be capable of fruiting which prob has alot to do with expensive prices.

Again thats not all fungi for sure :laugh2:

Back with more jars 🙈 Can't tell if this is problematic condensation or not? I noticed it today, but there's also been a 5 degree Celsius temp decrease in the room since yesterday. All five were done with agar wedges from two different plates exactly one week ago. Grain was a bit wet to begin with.

I imagine if I just keep waiting it will become more obvious, but curious on thoughts.

Thanks!

It looks like normal condensation for over hydrated grain. So far it looks ok but it does give bacteria an upper hand. I do agree that 1 grain looks like it could be off but I can't tell if the liquid around it is cloudy. Let's hope it's all good!

Here's a zoomed in picture of that particular grain last night, and a picture of the same grain this morning. I can't tell if it's cloudiness or reflection giving the tint 🤷🏻‍♀️ But it looks like the mycelium isn't avoiding it based on the progress, which I know it has done in previous jars where I've had a bacterial grain or two 🤷🏻‍♀️

Either way I was just planning to shoebox all of these individually, so not a huge deal.

They look healthy, I see no contamination, just a slow recovery. Are temperatures around you dropping? That might have something to do with it:mushroom2:

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I get over hydrated grains that stick to the side of the jar regularly with millet. It's not a problem. Sometimes there's some condensation near them:shrug:

If you have bacteria in a jar, you'll have a much better idea after a break and shake when it doesn't recover properly, gets creamy, wet, stops growing uniformly, forms weird dark barriers. That kind of thing.

I want to PC about 4 quarts of Coir for an experiment. What's the minimum time I can do it for? The reason I ask is because I want to do agar in the same PC run and don't want to over cook it.

Do you think if I divided into two or 4 bags I could get away with a 45 min PC time and still be certain that "everything" is dead?

Since Coco doesn't require pasteurization or sterilization, it's not going to matter much about the Coco.  I have hydrated bricks from the tap, it works, but I prefer "cooked" Coco and solid dense subs, a little crumbly straight from the faucet IME.  Agar is quick , 20-30 mins, done and done.

I bought some cheap molasses to try it out. Not a huge fan, but now I have a box. Does it have any use in cultivation? Agar instead of karo? cake additive? maybe ill do molasses drippy corn for the lulz

letting them dry out is just letting water evaporate. use correct ratios and always underestimate ime. the condensation ca result from temp swings are you letting them cool in the closed pc?

i see you are using glass petris, when does the condensation appear? Right after you take them out of the PC it's already there? Or does it develop a little later on?

There will always be some condensation your PC cycle involves steam to sterilize and steam causes condensation naturally :laugh2:

On another note u can try letting them dry in front of a flow hood if u got one

perhaps pictures of the condensation. Some condensation is normal, but if it is alot there may be steps you can take to reduce it.
