The halo is normal in my opinion it’s just enzymes breaking down the sugars/agar, unless the halo is wet and cloudy looking and on the surface then you probably have bacteria, but a transparent halo that’s through the depth of the agar should be normal

Thoughts on easiest way to sterilise a few glass slides? Are you using wet or dry heat (oven or pressure cooker)?

I pack them in foil and inside a PP5 container when I sterilize agar. I'm sure you could use dry heat, but haven't done it myself.

I dry heat sterilize my glass petris and I add my slides to one of those empty dishes.

If you haven’t planned ahead well enough to PC your slides as Kloakk and Scemilope suggest, I’ve had pretty good success dipping in IPA and flame sterilising. This DOES NOT work with cover slips which begin to melt and will bend. PCing is the best approach for both slides and cover slips but if you’re in a pinch flaming works for slides.

I have a strict protocol to only open brand new packs of slide and slips in the hood and then reseal with the impulse sealer each time and I pull from the stack with flamed tweezers so the packaging stays sterile after every use, it’s more steps but then I don’t have to PC it
