Shroom Wizard Tek Revisited

Well I tried my first tek using the Shroom Wizard's method. Just wanted to report that it fucking sucked. Got the mean green, luckily I only wasted 2 pint jars on it. I think now I'll just try to fruit some cakes PF teK style, in order to get my moral back up. That is after I wash, bleach, and reformat my 20 gallon. Perhaps it was the the casing material, (as Anno said) I don't know. Just thought I may save someone, it's simple, but it blows donkey balls....

I agree that the Shroom Wizard Tek blows chunks!



If you want to try a fool proof casing...try using 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir.

My casing method :

If you have a large mixing bowl put a small amount of Coco Coir in it.
Then add water to the Coco Coir til it expands.
Use very little, cause it goes a long ways.
Let it sit in the bowl and rehydrate for a little while...like 10 minutes.

Then add Verm and more water.

A good ratio is 60/40....Verm/Coco Coir.
More Verm than Coco Coir.

Mix the Verm and Coco Coir up really good!

Then put it in a Microwaveable container...the kind with a clear dome with a Vent built in are fantastic..if you can find them.
Make sure its wet enough.
Clean the inside of the microwave out...then spray some Lysol into the microwave.
Then Nuke the casing material for 5 minutes.
Pull it out and stir it up...add more water if needed.
Then Nuke it again for 5 more minutes.
Let it sit in the microwave for a couple hours to cool down.

Then after it has cooled down spray the air with Lysol.
Wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap!
Put your substrate in the container that your gonna use...cover it back up.
Pull the casing material out of the microwave.
Spray the air with Lysol.
Wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap.
Check the moisture level of the casing material by hand.
You should only be able to squeeze out a few drops of water...thats just right.
Apply a nice even layer of the casing material to the substrate.
Cover both containers back up.

Colonize the casing layer by putting it in a warm place or back in the incubator.

If the mycelium starts coming up in several places patch these to try and get a nice even colonized casing layer...this will promote a better pin set.
After the casing layer is colonized evenly.... initiate fruiting.

You the man Road Kill, Im on the hunt for the coco 2morrow. (actually later on today, I guess) I can't find Bed a Beast. But I'll take your words over shroom wizards words anyday. Thank you for posting the full method I really appreciate it :smile:

I think the Shroom Wizards tek isn't that good because he tells you to use 50potting soil/50 verm... I dunno bout you but potting soil doesn't work that good as a casing layer... I've tried it and it sucks!! 

My friend tried the Shroom Wizards tek this past summer, and he got his jars colonized no problem but after he cased it via Shroom Wizard tek it didn't do NOTHING!  It could've been because he kept the AC too cold sometimes, plus he didn't have a fruiting chamber he just left his tuppeware sit out in the open to dry out (not on purpose ofcourse). 

I like your casing preperation instructions Roadkill, I'm going to write that down :tongue:

You can find Coco Coir in pet stores in the Reptile section.
They use it for Reptile bedding.

Bed of Beast is one brand.
Forest Bed made by T-Rex is another brand.

G13's I failed bigtime. I used an "all organic" potting soil that I paid alot for.( In terms of soil anyway.) It didn't dry out just was being a great host to all the contams that knocked on it's door. Fuck I had some green ,orange, and violet visitors. Not good :frown: I followed evrything to the "tee" and no results. Also I must mention that these were two casings that were made from 80% colonized cakes. I will never do this again. I will always wait for 100% colonization in the future. (Which Shirley Knot pointed out to begin with)

Yeah that was most likely your mixtake... casing only 80% colonized jars would invite contams... I just used an 90% colonized jar tonight to spawn poo, but I first cut off the entire uncolonized part so all I had left was colonized:)

I would have to say to follow the PF tek per word for you to get some shroomies... me however, this is only my second attempt and I'm going for the gold (mmmm delicious golden caps) by spawning on horse poo! I really believe this is the way everybody should grow mushies in the long run. Read up on spawning and if you think you could do it, then try it out! I'm have VERY LITTLE problems with spawning, and so far I have 2 tuppewares full of colonized horse poo (about 90% colonized) ...

... Next step... Casing!!

Oh yeah about the potting soil... you can use some stuff that says "potting mix" because this usually has half peat moss half vermiculite which is a good casing mixture! Just make sure it doesn't have added fertilizer chemicals!

I suggest getting Jiffy Mix as a casing layer, it's 50/50 peat moss/vermiculite and has a dash of hydrated lime for PH balance (which is a big +)

Oh yeah I should mention my first casing tek I ever tried was SOS (Sea of Shrooms) and it's an easy one!! If you follow this tek you should be good to see fruits your next time!

Yes it is!

I named it up above as just another brand of Coco Coir.

In fact...I use the Forest Bed brand.
You missed the sale on the stuff...it was 2 for the price of 1.  :tongue:

was the deal from petco?

hmmm , i might just go pick some up @ petco.......

i went to petsmart & they didn't have bed-a-beast.

hopefully i'll have a better shot @ this product @ petco instead.

go over to www.mycotopia.net and look up Old Timer's Straw Tek (and his other teks): he blends the cakes into fine powders and straws them, etc etc: 2-3 days colonization and massive yeilds with right combos (listed) -- there is also a whole bunch of tips/etc (like using Miracle Grow---which apparently does the trick) and other stuff: check it out.
