As unfortunate as it is, hate speech is protected by freedom of speech

I work with a good amount of conservatives and they would be pissed at some of the shit said in OTD. Thats one of the reasons I know OTDers often exceed the boundaries of human decency.

I dont really clean plates. It's pretty much survival of the fittest in my lab. Kill or be killed.  But then, ive never gotten a contam at germ tbh.  If i did id ask

I have been spending too much time on mycology and letting some of my other interests go by the way side.


I look forward to returning to this wonderfull community in two weeks with a healthier mycology/life balance after my self ban has expired.

Maybe I am in a weird position simply because my political beliefs are so niche that I disagree with almost everyone right or left. I basically do not espouse them because people already think I'm weird and incomprehensible.

Fuck that. Not sure how this even works but thats not how I learned to round. 4.4 gets rounded DOWN in my experience. He's a four and he's earned it. If i ever get things changed, he'll end up a 1, which should basically be a ban in and of itself.

Good discussion in here. Arlo you're a fucking baller, some of this stuff I was truly unsure how I felt about, and then you come in with a single sentence and I'm like wait, shit, that is unassailably on point.

Beef, thanks as always for being willing to stick your neck out to try and make the vibes here on point.

Pasty, I'm with you for sure on the alienation of feeling incomprehensible because you got to your own set of political opinions from first principles. It's honest work and the pay is shit.

Lotta good talk in here and I'm not gonna try and touch on all of it. I guess here's the part of where my head's at that hasn't been said:

I wish there was a pub/otd that I wanted to be a part of. Like, I wanna talk about enils plane. That looks cool as fuck! I wanna hang out in the random picture thread, I wanna bullshit about inane horseshit and maybe even occasionally engage in the self-harm of pretending a nuanced political opinion can be made legible to a group of internet strangers.

But the ratio ain't there. I don't want the smoke. I'm an internet old head like most of us. My skin is thick as fuck. I got friends in real life that have opinions or behaviors that make my face scrunch sometimes, but I still hang because they still got a good heart, still bring people together for game night, still do cool stuff for the world on balance, and lord knows sometimes I veer off and act in ways they don't fuck with sometimes too. But any room with crackbaby in it is a room that I do not want to be in. There's a line. Some shit I just can't endorse by standing next to. So I just don't go there. And that's a bummer. But that's also the world, so hey, IDK.

I think OTD and pub being side by side in the list makes their culture blurry. I checked in on pub just now and it's actually not that bad, but because of how they're organized on the site, they're kinda one thing in my mind, and that keeps me out of pub.

I think a good step, that we could do with the functionality we already have in display settings, is put OTD behind a profile checkbox that's off by default for new users. It shouldn't even get shown. And when it does get shown, it should be a couple boxes away from pub. Politics and OTD should be like dead last. And then a slightly heavier moderation hand for some of the more consistently awful people, especially when they breach OTD and take that shit elsewhere. Those two things would sort a lot of it.

More random things that I think might be constructive.


* something like this at the top of profiles/rating pages, but for where people post. We have a graph like this but it's janky and buried af. And a small version or something shown under avatars when on ratings pages, so you can see when a 0 rating came from somebody that's not even in the same world. The usefulness of this hinges on the second thing:

* Retcon the OTD name to something less innocuous sounding. Offensive topic dumpster or something. Or Shroomchan. As a new user, if I see "off topic discussion" that sounds pretty innocent and reasonable and does not actually convey the thing it is. Seeing a lil chart that somebody spends 75% of their time in the offensive topic dumpster would help me figure out that hey, maybe they're not worth paying attention to.

* Some kind of softban or locale-ban from mods from other areas. EG if you're a mod on mushcult, I get not being able to ban somebody from the site for shit they said in OTD. But you should be able to ban somebody from mushcult for shit they said in OTD. That'd help too. Act how you wanna act in there. But let it have consequences: if you go off like that, other parts of the site might decide they don't want you around their corners. I'm iffy on this one, just a thought.

But ultimately, all we see online is the behavior, and not the person. There seems to be quite a few posters who now just run their mouths in asinine ways, even though they were once contributors to mush cult.

You're absolutely right, though, there are much worse people and places out there on the internet. Or maybe most of them are. That's why this is one of the very last places I still go online to discuss things. The thing is, though, that could change. If things got bad enough here, I could easily decide that the internet is just for e-mail, paying bills, and looking up the weather.

I've seen bars no one wants to hang out in because their rules are too strict. But I've also seen bars no one goes to because the same 5 assholes are always there harassing people.

It's always a delicate balancing act, and I do appreciate the work you put in.

Yeah, when I first signed up here, I will admit that I was pleasantly surprised to see a place where a category of people that I know still exist in the world was actually able to still be around. The internet really does censor the fuck of them and none of those people actually changed or went away. I remember when every website was like OTD is now. And yeah, it sucks that without moderation, a tiny number of truly insufferable people make the entire thing horrible for everyone. But the thing that the internet has turned into on websites that aren't the shroomery is also really tragic, just in the opposite direction. It's a gutless hollow echo chamber that is technically free of slurs, but still toxic for the soul and mind, in a quieter way.

I appreciate that we don't do that here. I count myself very thoroughly in the team-good-vibes-please camp, but pasty etc make the very fair point that at the end of the day, even the cuddliest among us are still coming here to felonypost.

I still think that the worst of the worst should be moderated harder, so that the whole place was a little more pleasant. But the Shroomery strikes a uniquely competent balance at attempting to allow actual free speech, and that light touch is delicate and worth preserving to a degree.
