Hey, that's a great advice thanks.. OK then i will wait a week bevore i do a transfer i have 2 quart jars with LC in looks good too today will post a picture later... My Plates bevore was great so my LC looks also good i highly belive the agar was not PC long enough but will see i will not transfer anything bevore the Week is gone.

+1 on waiting to ensure cleanliness, at least 3 days but a week is best.

How long did you PC? Because it's basically just water, PC times for agar are pretty chill. 30 minutes is plenty even for 1L bottles. Even in an instant pot 30 will do (though due to the lower pressure, in IP I sometimes do 45 to be safe).

For those jars, about 20-30% of the volume, but you have to account for the rootball of mycelium in the center that you cant see.
Pro-tip: I use a massage gun w/ rubber ball on low setting pressed to the bottom of the jar to B&S as it doesnt bruise as much and keeps uncolonized grains from getting stuck around the lid where they become high risk for contam

[Toloco massage gun amazon for those who want one; I hereby dub this Toloco Tek]

Also I noticed you said first shake, let me clarify that if you use liquid culture you can give your grain a gentle side-side shake (or I massage them) to disperse the liquid. That would be your "first shake", at 25% you do your "Second and Last shake" because you dont touch it after that.

TL;DR its ready for a shake, bounce it on your knee

Hey, I do shake my both Jars  let's see how they perform the next Day's

do regular hay bales work for straw?

Hay contains too much nitrogen which is what makes it a bad substrate. Though you could use a straw bale without issue. Chopping it up is some extra work as mentioned.

The stuff huskies linked is great. There's another shredded brand, straw boss, that they sell at tractor supply for like $11 a bale. Stuff is solid. Sometimes you get a sprout or two growing with straw, but it's a non issue. There's a link in my signature for pasteurizing straw as a substrate if you are interested.:mushroom2:

If I understand mycorrhizal fungi correctly, and I am not claiming that I do. The rye/grass grown from feed hays would be tremendously beneficial to those species as the grasses roots would provide the support structure to exchange nutrients between the grass and fungi.

question:

trying to source glass petri dishes to get started on agar. turns out these are very difficult to find in town. looking online the ones i am seeing are all borosilicate and have a temperature threshold. my understanding is that one sterilizes these in a pressur cooker prior to use. am i wasting my time with borosilicate or does it matter? is there a preferred supplier you guys like to use?

Borosilicate is the preferred type of glass for most labware because itโ€™s pretty resistant against high heat and sudden temperature changes. So perfect to use in a pressure canner.

Personally I prefer reusable plastic petri dishes. I think most people here prefer plastic over glass Petri dishes because they are easier to handle.

I took some torch glass forming classes in college (but no blowing, sadly), so I remember a couple things:

borosilicate is a strong glass, it's what lab glass and OG pyrex was made of (the pyrex name was since bought, and modern pyrex are no longer the lab-grade tanks they used to be. Vintage pyrex is indestructible.).

IDK if all borosilicates are created equal, but if they're inexpensive and you can get one or two, it could be worth a try. As with PP5 plastics, there's some wiggle room between what they say it can handle and what it can actually handle. I've PC'd some things I technically shouldn't and been pleasantly surprised, but I've lost the gamble and melted some stuff as well.

With glass, slow change is key. Bring it to temp both up and down as gently as possible. Natural release on the PC, or even a supervised burner lowering if possible (though that's a lot of work, only worth it if the nat release is giving you trouble). Going from PC temp to room temp too quickly is what will stress/break the glass. EG setting hot glass on a cold stone countertop. The touching edge will shrink faster as it cools rapidly while the inside is still warm and a bit expanded, and that difference is what will cause the brittle glass to fracture. Changing temp slowly lets the whole unit adjust unniformly, so that there aren't stress points in any one area.

When we would finish working on a glass piece, we'd move it to a special oven/kiln that would keep it hot but below melting point, and then sloooowly drop it down to room temp overnight, to minimize the risk of breakage.

Full disclosure, I've never personally worked with glass petris, so I can't recommend any suppliers or anything.

The borosilicate are the good ones, will have some printing on them regarding size maker etc. The cheapies are soda-lime glass. They aren't really supposed to go in the PC but they actually work fine.

For sure. Shake away friend.

Also.

I just wanted to step in here and say his second Shake definitely shouldn't be his last shake.(and it's okay if you feel like doing it even more times along the way in between.)  Just don't go overboard. But as long as your jar is healthy it's not going to matter too much.

Anyways

Lots of us around here practice doing a final break and Shake
usually a couple days before we actually spawn the thing.

We like to break it up one more time nice and good and then see how quickly it recovers or if it decides to reveal  some contams we maybe overlooked or couldnt see..

If the recover time is quick in the myc starts growing back without any issues or revealing contams. then we feel super confident about spawning it to bulk..

This is just a little trick for some reassurance and going into your grow without having to worry as much.

while awaiting the come-up on my first big trip i was playing mario rpg so i chose this name in honour of that wonderful night. always loved belome, big food obsessed glutton who hangs around in a temple all day surrounded by shamen and zoning the fuck out. felt like a perfect fit. i never tried any of the other RPGs, i knew i would just be setting myself up for disappointment. the original is my ultimate happy place game

Borosilicate can handle like 450 degrees Fahrenheit,  no commercial PC reaches that temp,  I use Borosilicate and they are good:thumbup:
