Ah, ok. I've been stuck on using these lids for years. Literally these lids, I've used some for over 100 rounds in the PC. They never go bad, I only make new ones when the tyvek envelope material gets worn out from the teeth of the jars. The work great for all projects other than LC jars.

Awesome old school filters. I was always too chicken to try the USPS envelopes as filters but they're tyvek as far as I know.

I've always used foil out of habit, maybe it's time to change...

Foil is far more old school than mine. Don't be skerd... The USPS envelopes work perfect if you do a layer on both sides of the lid. If you do just a single layer, the jars tend to dry out quicker. Whether they are truly tyvek or not, I'm not sure. But they have never let me down, and I use them for years without needing to make new ones. I do still cover them with foil caps during the PC process so water doesn't pool on top of the lids.

This is one thing I keep seeing here, but not in other mycology research groups. I don't really understand why the clear totes are superior to the pop up SABs that can be purchased from major mycology hobby supply vendors.

Is there an advantage that I am not aware of in the rigid versions made from totes over lower cost SABs with built in sleeves?

Thank you in advance for further information!

As I understand it, the soft walls can act like diaphragms, where movement turns them into sails that lightly push a wall-sized column of air, lifting settled contams back into the air and taking the S out of SAB. They're also much less resistant to being gently bumped by an arm, table and chair movement, etc, which can set off a similar thing. If the point is to have air that doesn't move, walls that can move (and push air in the process) are problematic.

Is it a big deal? IDK. I've never tried one despite, ironically, having one in my garage that an ex bought for non-cult-related reasons. But that's the main rationale behind the dislike.

Edit: oh and the sleeves are worse. They do something I've heard called the syringe effect / piston effect, where because they're sealed and create a light vacuum, pulling your arms in and out causes a whoosh of air much more forceful than the one you'd get from just moving slowly in an environment that didn't have an air vacuum. The open area of hard SAB holes are a feature not a bug, they let air pressure equalize.

Thoseflemsy scam boxes are more likely to increase contams than help.

Lwk id have better luck in open air than those trashy fake ones.

If ur gonna get a sab then do it right lol and the price is small compared to jars or a ffu and it pays for itself by not ruining progress or chances of success

only sheep's use those plastic sail sabs :beatadeadhorse:

Thank you very much for your informative response!

The diaphragm issue does make sense, I will see how I can mitigate that as I am functioning very well in my current SAB. One thing that I believe is helping is I have a 3D printed wheel lock on my office chair, because if I can roll around my office I stay more focused at work, I had no idea this would one day help with mycology!

The piston issue with the sleeves sounds valid to me, however I noticed after my first two sessions that the sleeves were too large and in the way. To mitigate this I removed the stock sleeves sewed on new tyvek(I have been sitting on a mountain of this since our house was built, so glad I finally have a use for it!) ones and restitched the elastic bands to a smaller diameter to better fit my smaller firearms. I believe that coupled with the elbow length gloves, and N95 masks I have been using for each session since then.

My current contamination rate is well within the expected bounds for a hobbyist as of yesterday it was %6 on bulk inoculation, and %3 on agar/LC work.
