I sterilize them with my agar, wrapped in foil twice in stacks of 5 and placed on top of wide half pint.

I can then fit the foil and plates easily through the arm holes of the SAB to cool. There's only a little moisture on them when I unwrap them, and it dries up fast with the plates just sitting in the SAB

These plates hold so much agar, 400ml can easily be used on 10 plates which is what I've been doing.

Buys me more time with room temp storage:awesomenod::mushroom2:

Don't forget, with glass plates you also have the option to sterilize them with the agar already inside them. Pre-pour/no-pour style.

It may not be as cool as trying not to burn your hand or ruin plates or trying to keep agar at a certain temp, or as many steps as pouring agar...

But it works for me.

That's cool. Any reason why that wouldn't work with reusable polycarb plates as well>

Nope, should work for any reusable plates.

I mean with that logic, you could also use your dehydrator in the same way you can use it to pasteurize substrate no?

I would be wary of the fans pumping contaminated air- which could be remedied if you put whatever you were sterilizing in bags/containers/jars (ala sub pasteurization).

Might be a niche method for a few tools if you wanted to go that route without firing up the oven:shrug:

Folks used to pasteurize sub/casing in turkey bags in the oven using a temperature probe. Dry heat works for pasteurization but will only sterilize tools and dishes, it won't work for complex loads with heavy bioburden like grains. I've authored a thread re spore pasteurization using a dehydrator, I'm sure an oven would work as well.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/29130723#29130723

I think there's plenty of evidence that a dehydrator can pasteurize items so long as the item itself lacks any significant bioload. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't  For reliable results I'd stick to the tried and true methods utilizing steam/water bath (cleanest), or an oven, depending on item to be pasteurized. A broken clock is right twice/day. The density of the item should be considered as well as the timer doesn't start until core temperature is reached. The septic nature of the dehydrator should also be considered as they harbor a significant spore load by comparison, especially after running Pablo Escobar amounts of mushrooms.

The longer it takes an item to reach core temp, the longer it's exposed to vectors for contamination when being processed using less desirable methods or equipment.

Might have to give that a go on some dirty ass gymnopilus prints I have. Good shit.

As far as the sub /casing goes, it totally makes sense that a heavier bioload wouldn’t work so well in a dehydrator pasteurization scenario.
However even with some bioload I have found that it can indeed work.
At the moment I have a shoebox of Zapotecorum that is using a coir and yucca flower stalk wood ammended substrate.
I made the sub back in June.
Granted that I don’t have a wide data pool to draw from, and another sub made with phragmite cane did contam out, it’s enough of a win for me. I still got zaps😬
Maybe down the road I’ll change my mind haha

Damn you’re still on that?
Bro look at the end of the day ziplocks in 160 degree dehydrators don’t melt and don’t dry out the sub/casing.
You can be snarky all you want but it doesn’t change the fact that you are wrong.
They are plenty of other members who do it.

Sure, I may not be someone worth learing from to you. I accept that.
Maybe you just never ventured out from cubes?
And that’s okay, cubes are the gold standard and plenty of icon status TCs got that tag strictly by growing cubes (not that you’re an icon or anything but you get what I’m saying).

I’m sure if you ventured out to something like zapotecorum, semperviva/subtropicalis or another exotic species that take a lot more finesse  and skill you might change your tune.

Either way my man I’m  sure you deserve that tag but you are def proof positive that at the end of the day TC really don’t mean anything.
Happy new year to ya homie.

Don't let my jaded skimming of the boards shit on your parade

I never said 160° will melt bags. I said dry heat will.  Fine line dog.

I'm just not a fan of plastics and dry heat.

So simmer down and happy new year. Best of luck to ya.

Now i'm gonna get my old ass outta here again. Peace

General consensus on storing glass plates in ziplocks while awaiting inoculation? I already did it, so I guess we'll see, but curious if one can generally get away with it. Wrapping stacks of 5 was PITA.

oughta be ok - stuff like that, made to food safety standards, is *very* clean.

i did some work one evening in a place that made plastic bags…it was pretty cool…the film was a continuously-flowing tube of plastic that went straight up, three stories in height, for cooling before being routed for cutting, sealing, etc.  Has nothing at all to do with your question, but it was a neat process to see! I love seeing how stuff gets made.

I worked in a place like that. Stood in front of a spooling machine, plastic wrapped into a roll, I cut it and boxed it. 12hr shifts...shit was torture for someone who can't stand boredom.
