I mean with that logic, you could also use your dehydrator in the same way you can use it to pasteurize substrate no?

I would be wary of the fans pumping contaminated air- which could be remedied if you put whatever you were sterilizing in bags/containers/jars (ala sub pasteurization).

Might be a niche method for a few tools if you wanted to go that route without firing up the oven:shrug:

Din't use dry heat for substrate. Will dry it out and melt bags.

Your logic is a tad flawed.

160 Β°F will not melt a Ziploc bag, much less a grow bag.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28297179

(I'm not suggesting sterilizing in an oven though. The temperature required would be far too high - the low temp of steam sterilization is its main virtue.)

Tell that to my zaps

In all seriousness Phaethon is right.
160/165 won’t melt ziplocks, even for 12 plus hours.
I’ve done it to pasteurize substrate and there is a few posts around people use dehydrators and ziplocks for pasturizing casing.

It won’t dry out if you leave it unzipped and  fold the under itself so it can vent a little.
Give it a shot homie, it works.

Also you can pasteurize sub in zips in a dehydrator that cranks to 165F.

Damn you’re still on that?
Bro look at the end of the day ziplocks in 160 degree dehydrators don’t melt and don’t dry out the sub/casing.
You can be snarky all you want but it doesn’t change the fact that you are wrong.
They are plenty of other members who do it.

Sure, I may not be someone worth learing from to you. I accept that.
Maybe you just never ventured out from cubes?
And that’s okay, cubes are the gold standard and plenty of icon status TCs got that tag strictly by growing cubes (not that you’re an icon or anything but you get what I’m saying).

I’m sure if you ventured out to something like zapotecorum, semperviva/subtropicalis or another exotic species that take a lot more finesse  and skill you might change your tune.

Either way my man I’m  sure you deserve that tag but you are def proof positive that at the end of the day TC really don’t mean anything.
Happy new year to ya homie.

Aaaanyway :pinkelephant:

What do you guys use for a syringe stand?

I mean, when I've got a bunch in my SAB working with prints or whatever, I want them to stand needle-up, but they tend to topple like dominoes if they're not secure.

I've been using my test tube rack but it's not ideal.  Hoping someone here has had a simple, clever idea.

The Vabiooth ones are not polypropylene. They are polycarbonate and are perfectly transparent.

Edit: pics

These are way better than the polypropylene ones you are used to seeing.

Folks used to pasteurize sub/casing in turkey bags in the oven using a temperature probe. Dry heat works for pasteurization but will only sterilize tools and dishes, it won't work for complex loads with heavy bioburden like grains. I've authored a thread re spore pasteurization using a dehydrator, I'm sure an oven would work as well.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/29130723#29130723

I think there's plenty of evidence that a dehydrator can pasteurize items so long as the item itself lacks any significant bioload. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't  For reliable results I'd stick to the tried and true methods utilizing steam/water bath (cleanest), or an oven, depending on item to be pasteurized. A broken clock is right twice/day. The density of the item should be considered as well as the timer doesn't start until core temperature is reached. The septic nature of the dehydrator should also be considered as they harbor a significant spore load by comparison, especially after running Pablo Escobar amounts of mushrooms.

The longer it takes an item to reach core temp, the longer it's exposed to vectors for contamination when being processed using less desirable methods or equipment.

Agar Wedge said:
I sterilize them with my agar, wrapped in foil twice in stacks of 5 and placed on top of wide half pint.

I can then fit the foil and plates easily through the arm holes of the SAB to cool. There's only a little moisture on them when I unwrap them, and it dries up fast with the plates just sitting in the SAB

These plates hold so much agar, 400ml can easily be used on 10 plates which is what I've been doing.

Buys me more time with room temp storage:awesomenod::mushroom2:

Don't forget, with glass plates you also have the option to sterilize them with the agar already inside them. Pre-pour/no-pour style.

It may not be as cool as trying not to burn your hand or ruin plates or trying to keep agar at a certain temp, or as many steps as pouring agar...

But it works for me.
