My new fan filter unit arrived. I posted this in the FFU thread too but am so happy am sharing it here too :P

It was sourced from a clean room factory and cost $600 USD including shipping and a custom made wooden crate. It took 3 months to arrive from China.

I'm hoping this is a game changer though in all honesty I haven't dealt with contamination issues (aside from the dirty spore swabs) in a while now and that's with an SAB.

Now I can do bags.

Ima need a bigger desk.

Damn looks luxurious.

I would tape a MERV filter on the fan that draws the air. Thats what I did and it collects a lot of funk especially if you own a dog

That's a good idea, thanks. Do you find that the MERV filter reduces air flow by much and is duct tape fine to use?

Thats what I use

Some other members have fabricated a slot to drop it into. I dont change mine as often so I have been running the same filter without much issue but I would replace every few months in practice

2x4'? $600 not bad for that big an FFU! (assuming it's a good quality filter and it's all sized properly to make good flow)

Buy through alibaba? Can you share a link?

Also +1 to the previous post suggesting you put a cheap furnace filter in front of the blower intake, but be careful of anything that restricts airflow--most FFUs don't have a lot to spare. I use MERV 1 filters.

Thanks. I'll probably just duct tape it then lol.

Thanks. Yes it was through alibaba, you can find the link here.

What's funny is that Bonsai branded flowhoods being sold in the USA use the exact same photos as the alibaba manufacturer, not just a photo of the same flowhood but they're using the manufacturers photo.

The 2x4ft bonsai flow hoods sell for $1100 USD in the USA.

Keep in mind I'm a lot closer to China than the USA is so the shipping may cost significantly more to the USA but I don't doubt there are vendors in the USA buying these from chinese manufacturers and selling them with a massive markup.

The shipping time is killer, it took 3 months to arrive via sea freight.

Overall it was well worth the wait.

Yeah bonsai marks up those FFUs quite a bit. About a year ago I picked up the bonsai XL (24x18") laminar flow hood for about $700 and I've loved it, but the nice finish carpentry made it worthwhile for me (I have zero skill or desire with wood). I don't get how they are charging $800 for a 3x2 FFU now, though, that's nuts.

How is the cement mixer working out? Definitely curious to know! Currently hand mixing our substrate with a shovel ahah it’s not too bad but would be nice to have a machine do it

Interesting! I think about the waste every time I throw my petris dishes in the trash:rolleyes:

How do you dry your glass dishes after sterilization? How do you handle them in general?

Wrap them in foil before you PC them, and after the PC cools they're basically dry.  You can also do them in the oven, dry, although I haven't tried that so far.

Personally I'm on the fence re: plastic v. glass.  Disposables are easier to handle and don't require sterilization - but yeah, the waste.

I'm using up my remaining disposables and will probably go back to using my glass ones once they run out.

I sterilize them with my agar, wrapped in foil twice in stacks of 5 and placed on top of wide half pint.

I can then fit the foil and plates easily through the arm holes of the SAB to cool. There's only a little moisture on them when I unwrap them, and it dries up fast with the plates just sitting in the SAB

These plates hold so much agar, 400ml can easily be used on 10 plates which is what I've been doing.

Buys me more time with room temp storage:awesomenod::mushroom2:

Whoa! I might have to try this! I currently live in an apartment complex and I dont use a PC because of the noise it produces while its in process. This might be viable for me :strokebeard:

Yarp, works great. I dry heat sterilize my empty glass petris and metal hand tools.
Here's a time guide I found in a Rutgers medical school lab procedure manual.

I mean with that logic, you could also use your dehydrator in the same way you can use it to pasteurize substrate no?

I would be wary of the fans pumping contaminated air- which could be remedied if you put whatever you were sterilizing in bags/containers/jars (ala sub pasteurization).

Might be a niche method for a few tools if you wanted to go that route without firing up the oven:shrug:

Din't use dry heat for substrate. Will dry it out and melt bags.

Your logic is a tad flawed.

160 Β°F will not melt a Ziploc bag, much less a grow bag.

(I'm not suggesting sterilizing in an oven though. The temperature required would be far too high - the low temp of steam sterilization is its main virtue.)
