No such thing as a stupid question. Especially not here.

Unfortunately I'm wasting your time sorry Im gonna wait  and let somebody who's more articulate answer those ones.

Question tax-

Does anybody have any idea if it's absolutely necessary to be using a trivet for raising jars off the bottom in the instapot?

I think in puddings tek. He says something about it not being necessary. Yes for the PC obviously but not for the insta. Hes states Done countless runs without any issues.

Anybody else have any experience with this?

I'm just wondering cuz every once in awhile my jars not fit with a trivet.

The very first run I did in it I didn't use a trivet I just put a piece of foil down so there was something between the jars and the bottom simply keeping them from directly touching the bottom. But still resting on it..

I've done a few more runs with court jar since then and they all fit fine but the one I'm trying to do right now for some reason the lids not wanting to fit and I can't get the positioning right even though it seems like there's plenty of room. Anyways I'm removing one of my jar rings on that area to make it happen.

Id just like to know moving forward if it's something I even have to care very much about or not?

3) Can bruising occur from any variable, too dry, too wet, physical contact, genetic, etc.?

Here's what I know...

High FAE can dry out the outer layers of the mushroom or exposed mycelium, making the tissue brittle and more prone to dark oxidation or bruising edges.

Heavy rain can completely fill the mushroom's cellular structure with water, making the tissue heavy, fragile, and much easier to bruise or rupture from falling raindrops, wind, or handling.

What kind of question is #3?

Not the definitive answer on all of this, but in my experience:
FerengiTrader said:
Stupid questions:
No they're not

1a) Can passive FAE cause oxidation bruising?
Not typically, but cold can, if the FAE does that

1b) Can a lack of FAE cause oxidation bruising?
If it can I've never seen it, exempting when it starts to kill the mushroom and yeah it turns kindof abort colored from stress

1c) Do wild mushrooms bruise from strong winds?
Plausible but mostly it seems like their neighbors and random debris bumping into them

2a) Can direct misting cause bruising?
yes if it's from something like a regular spray mister with a thick stream (vs the atomized spray of the hair salon misters etc)

2b) Do wild mushrooms bruise from heavy rains?
IDK but probably, I've bruised mushrooms from hitting them softer than a hard raindrop

3) Can bruising occur from any variable, too dry, too wet, physical contact, genetic, etc.?
Contact and cold are most common. Heat, and dry, probably, but also rate of change seems to be a thing, the shock is stressful. Too wet isn't really a thing, myc can live fully submerged in water without blueing.

Genetics influence potency which influences amount of blueing, since psilocin is what's oxidizing, which will change how much it's visible for a given input. I've had batches that wouldn't blue much even being handled hard, and others that would get very dark if you so much as brush them.

Stress, especially contams, also belong on this list.

Since today you guys were all talking about agar and agar recipes. Does anyone here add yeast to their recipe?

I have seen some recipes online that sound like witchcraft, a pinch of this, a pinch of that, like 3 or four ingredients on top of agar and LME.

Anyone can vouch for that?

What I read was that those complex recipes encourage rhizo, which to me sounds like a load of crap, but just wanted to check with you guys.

Thanks!

yeah I'm saying it works for prepped grains. Low prep/nsns grains don't work as well without the trivet but your mileage may vary

Trich starts off BRIGHT white. Brighter and whiter than the surrounding mycelium, then turns green. All that said, I too find it hard to see your pics clearly enough.

Real mycologists do it so I presume it has some merit

I've done yeast and soy peptone, and never seen results that stood out. Not to say it's BS or doesn't work, but it seems to be mild if it does, at least for cubes.

Now low nute plates? That will coax out the rhyzo much more reliably IME. A half nute recipe (50% of agar weight instead of 1:1) is my go-to if I don't like how fluffy something is.

... why tf don't I just run 80% nute plates as my default. I see people post those recipes fairly often. I should switch

Picsto blurry to be definitive it could be a blue mold.

Though the color matches bruising in my humble opinion that means nothing in this hobby get a better picture or guess for the rest o yo tubs life

F around n find out eh?
Or learn here and now if it's clean by getting a good pic. And as long as ur slow af opening lid n closing it u shouldn't have to worry about it contacting other grows lwk if it is moldy and if it is you'd do more harm to your cult by ignoring it and letting it grow more 😎

Lol. I was..

sealing the tubs and spraying them with alcohol and everything is completely unnecessary.  The pics are blurry to begin with so zooming in makes no difference.

If you want your question answered you going to have to open that up and get a better picture. There's nothing wrong with opening it up. you just don't do it constantly multiple times a day

And get used to opening up your tubs to look at them. especially if you have questions and are taking pictures.

Because people are going to ask you around here to do it a lot.

And dont worry bout cross contamination. That shit ain't gonna jump to another tub.  It Never has with any if mine.

I've grown contaminated shoe boxes next to uncontaminated shoe boxes inside of a water tub with a lid on. Without any cross-contamination

Being trapped breathing air full of alcohol vapors does more harm than good, unless you let it evap first, at which point it does nothing anyway. The myc has an immune system at this point, if you've got issues, it's most likely spawn-side and not related to stuff landing on the tub after going to bulk.

The caution is understandable, but those kinds of rituals don't actually prevent or slow down anything.

I'm team bruising, especially on the top tub, presuming the very dark bits on the bottom tub are coir. But it shouldn't be doing that, so it's probably fighting something off on slightly bad spawn. Is the dense white on the right side of the top one a bunch of pins? It looks like it's pretty fuzzy/wants FAE, but it also looks kinda reachy. Blueing, pinning big/early, and reaching hard / growing upwards are all tells for myc that's trying to outrun a mild but widespread contam of some kind.

It's well colonized though and it is pinning, so I'd bump the air a bit and let it ride. No reason to toss it.

I think he's doing it cuz he's concerned about cross-contamination. In his grow space

I edited my post about  to also comment on that and to say that shouldn't worry about that as well.
