Any suggestions on substrate?
Poo/no poo? Coir? Sawdust?

I'll be picking up an isolate when they are available if they don't sell out immediately.

Maybe not sell out immediately... but I dig your enthusiasm!

Ps. zinnii spore isolate syringes are available.

Here is some microscopy:

Both the pseudoaztecorum and natalensis have been grown on coir/manure by other members so that is what I'll be attempting in my grow. I believe cow manure was used by most people but I have a supply of composted horse manure that I need to burn through so I'll be trying 50/50 coir/horse manure.

I was thinking about it and after looking at others growing both of the species I decided to try the composted manure and the coir+. The only reason I decided to also try the coir+ is because I see true nats are not found on dung, although I see people are successful getting them to grow on it, plus I have everything for it anyway.

Me too. I'll be able to compare it to the ms version, which will be fun to pheno hunt the ms.

Oh interesting! Hadn't thought of that! Since this one runs through mid December, should definitely be time. That'd be fun.

I have activity on my plates! Not much to see but maybe in the next day or so I'll get some pics after I transfer. Since I use holy Grail plates I need to remove the lid for good pics, so it will be after I transfer to keep things sterile as much as possible.

I'm going to try basic coir, and a coir+, and I might try some worm castings and coir+ mixed up. when I get a decent clean culture and good grain spawn. I have the MS and ISO on agar now. MS had some myc but I'm waiting to got enough for a few good transfers. ISO is still getting adjusted to being out of the syringe.

Wtf is Psilocybe zinii? Julian made a natalensis x pseudoaztecorum hybrid nearly 2 years ago.

Anyways, it's Section Cubensae. Dung loving (Grain loving in cultivation terms) species. It will fruit on coir and grain alone. If you need manure, then it's some weak ass isolate.

They are giving Julian Mattucci credit and in contact with him as well.

Just a quick note that Ps. natalensis x Ps. psuedoaztecorum was first successfully produced as dikaryotic cross culture mycelium in 2023 by Julian Mattucci of Imperial Scientific. Our team just happened to be engaged in a fantastic parallel discovery and are now chatting with him to compare notes and move projects like this forward with more authority.

From SW website:
"The DNA of this strain was extracted, put through a PCR and the ITS region amplified for testing. DNA confirmed the unique genetic profile. We were surprised when we ran the sequence through NCBI BLAST to find another sequence from the same hybrid of species, provided in August of 2025 by Julian Mattucci of Imperial Scientific. A difference of two nucleotides separated our hybrid from the sample already uploaded to the databank."

Was it available for everyone to scope? I haven't seen anything on the substrate so I was guessing on what to use. I wasn't sure if dung was needed so I was going to test it. What other info do you have on this? A link maybe?

Manure is not a requirement but it may or may not fruit more robustly with manure.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=29183195&page=0&vc=1#29183195

I have most information anyone would need here when working with any Psilocybe. Julian keeps his work pretty low-key these days but I've been watching him work on it for a while now. He also sent it to me and I fruited it with and without manure. The grows without manure fruited significantly faster. I'm talking weeks ahead if I recall correctly. The grows with manure did fruit much larger fruits though.
Also, there was distinct morphology between using manure and not, but these are still unstable.

Hey Pheno👋 Do you have any pictures of your grow? Thanks for the info about substrate; I’ll still likely try both options for funsies.

I'm trying to upload more pictures but it's been very hard for me to upload pictures on here for several months now. Most of the time, it just doesn't work and idk why. Might have to just make a new account or something.
