Curious about the ways I've noticed BIG growers do it differently
    #29642978 -

I'm absolutely confused as to why all these videos I keep seeing of advanced growers with these huge flushes growing out of substrate that doesn't have much mycelium on top at all. All of my tubs so far (all 3, lol) only pinned after the surface was COMPLETELY colonized. Would I have gotten pins way before the entire surface had colonized if my FAE and evaporation was ideal? I just don't understand how I keep seeing these massive clusters of mushrooms coming out what looks like dark black substrate that only appears to be lightly speckled with mycelium. I've seen many tubs that were patchy in terms of surface coverage but with massive flushes growing all over, whether theres thick, visible surface mycelium or not.

A couple other things I'm curious about that I've also noticed many large, advanced grows do is taking tub lids off during fruiting and leave them in an open fruiting chamber. Surely these are close to sterile chambers, but they aren't wearing any tyvex suits and are just wearing short sleeve shirts, no masks or gloves. The air is sterile and that seems to be enough. What was also surprising is that none of their large bins have FAE holes. I'd REALLY Love to know what the exact process is here.

These videos are a very good example of what I'm talking about:

From all the tubs of cubes I've grown I've seen two tubs that wasn't 100% colonized when they started fruiting and didn't end up contaminated after first flush. So I would say that 100% colonization before fruiting is what you want with cubes.

Then you might see some people doing a proper casing even for cubes, a proper casing is pH adjusted and most of the time will only be partially colonized because of the pH being high. But again, I never bother with casing with cubes, not even PE varieties because I just don't get much better results and it's a hassle, I would do two tubs instead of a proper casing if I needed more fruits.

The open tubs is for the video and most of the tubs seems ready for harvest anyway. Later in the last video you see the tubs stacked and with the lids on. And as I've told you earlier, there's no harm in taking the lid off for 5 minutes as long as the spawn was clean, I grow mostly exotics and even with a pasteurized substrate I spawn in open air, most of the time as long as the spawn was clean and the substrate was properly pasteurized things will work out fine.

Once you’ve spawned, it’s inherently a non-sterile process. It helps to stay as sterile as possible, but I believe you’re chasing the last few %.

We shouldn’t be spawning until the sub is 100% colonized, at which point it should be fairly robust in its ability to fight off contam. That’s the key here, strong clean spawn.

And unless you sterilize your sub, it’s not sterile anyhow. I’m not recommending you do, either, simply pointing that out.

I got three flushes from this tub and the surface was barely colonized.

This is something that has confused me for a while now. Why does everyone use bucket tek when pressure cooking the substrate would be a much better way of ridding it of contamints?

That makes sense. I mean I figured they were just trying to showcase them but I had seen a lot of videos where I thought it looked like maybe they just left them open because they had other open ones in the background, and I thought maybe they could because its a sterile (or close to) chamber.

Because it is good enough. It is true that pc'ing coir would kill more endospores then bucket tek will, but we are spawning in open air and there is thousands of mold and bacteria spores floating around in open air unless you have a sterile room to spawn in.

If the grain spawn is clean and 100% colonized there isn't any available nutrients for anything to germinate in.

I learned the stinky way to NOT keep pasteurized coir sealed in jars at room temperature for extended periods. Once stuff goes anaerobic all manner of havoc can start up.

Had a spare pint after a recent project and so just left it in the mason jar for a while. Eventually cracked it open and was greeted by an oh-so-fascinating sulfur aroma filling my apartment.

Decided to play and bit and tried re-pasteurizing it. The sulfur scent went away but was replaced by a weird, potent, nauseating burnt rubber-y sort of scent. Dried the coir out in my oven, and the scent went away, but upon rehydrating, back it was. And so to the trash it went.

So, uh... yeah. Don't try and salvage vintage coir.

BUT, for the record, the project that I used the rest of that batch of coir for went fine. No weird scents, no weird growth patterns, no slime, just normal coir goodness.

Mmmm ain't nothing like fresh rhino farts in the morning, smells like.... lager beer fermenting.

:derpyum:

Not all coir are created equal and I have found everything from seeds to shoe laces in mine so of course. The longest I've kept hydrated coir around is probably a couple of months and it was still fine. However, I agree and see no reason to hydrate more then what I need for the next run, bucket tek is easy and only takes a minute, I never use my coir bucket for anything else then coir

Honestly, the sulfur smell wasn't even that awful, just unexpected. The weird neoprene/raw meat/hydraulic fluid scent it gained on cooking though.... THAT scent stuck in my nose for days and completely turned my stomach.

The useless nerd in me wants to know what the chemicals involved were. I'm legitimately annoyed that I didn't keep samples for anaerobic culturing just... to satisfy my brain.

Sounds like that coir got a yeast infection. When yeast struggle they'll throw sulphur, I guess there wasn't much to feed off and so the yeast died. As the cells rupture, they release amino acids, lipids, and proteins that taste and smell like rotting meat, bouillon, or burnt rubber.

Then along comes something like Clostridium(anaerobi bacteria), that shit can generate pungent, foul organic acids (such as butyric acid, which smells like rancid butter or vomit) or putrefactive compounds :naughty:

Cubes don't pin from the surface mycelium they form pins on rhizo strands that come up from under the surface.

That's why overlay is a problem because the surface mat of mycelium stops the rhizo strands coming through and impedes fruiting triggers like FAE under the surface of the matted growth on the surface.

I had a little cvg left over from my last bucket tek. I put it in a tupperware but it grew a little patch of cobweb mold. Is there any way I can rinse the shit out of it and PC it to kill it all and still use it or am I spinning my wheels?

Wouldnt do that.

These videos you posted are pretty dated.  We dont case cubes anymore and we sure as shit dont wear masks and hair nets after spawning.  I spawn with bare hands in my pajamas..  i canopy every tub i grow without a casing or sterilizing my coir.  I do Not use verm or gypsum.  Both are obsolete.

You dont even need hot water or to pasteurize the coir at all even.  Cold water works just fine it just takes longer to soak the brick.

Coir is devoid of nutrition and ive held it in buckets for months without it contaminating.  Youre not quite understanding the spawning process.  I wrote a blurb about it ill try to find but i think you would be behooved to read the hitchhikers guide.

Most of the "professional" grows I've seen look terrible. Very few bona fide mycologists have the slightest idea how to actually grow actives. It's mostly theory to them.

Pasty nailed it right on the head, there are cultivators and then we have lab coat folks, me doing agar doesn't make me a mycologist at all, I want to grow, my sisters and bro's.  There is studying fungi, and then practical experience being a cultivator, two different realms.

Hey Beef, could you point to the info on the coir being devoid of nutrition? I have read conflicting info from RR. I would like to know more

Found the post from 16 year ago, yikes!

What can i say? He was wrong. There is utterly no nutrition in coir.  Its cellulose.

Although i think he was basically being sarcastic.  theres no nutrituon for mushrooms in manure either.  They arent plants.
