Different kinds of mycelia
    #359114 - 07/23/01 01:21 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I'm incubating my first set of jars (1/2 pint, MicronMagick, 4 inoc sites, 80?F temps) and we're on day 5 post inoc (Hawaiian). Things are going great - mycelium showed up in 3 days and are blasting through the substrate (rice/quinoa/vermiculite) at an amazing rate. Fun!
I've noticed that the mycelia from some inoc sites looks different than others, even in the same jar. At site A it looks rhizomorphic, but at site B it looks more fuzzy and not stringy - but still growing fast.
Is this normal? Could site B be a contam? Any advice / comments apprecitated!

With a multispore inoculation many different strains with different appearance are created.

I'm a newbie also. I had the same question when my jars were colonizing. It turns out that there are many ways that the spores colonize in the jar. Some look thin and wispy. Some look thick and cottony, etc... The things for contams you have to look for are any other color besides white. Yellow is alright but grey is not. If the mycelium looks grey and cottony then it most likey is cotton mold.

Thanks all for the reassurance.
Anno, your comment made something go "click" in my brain - I stayed up last night surfing sites (starting with yours) and reading about mycology. Now I understand much better about mushroom reproduction, strain isolation, pure culture technique, etc. Thanks for the little push.
