Just wondering if someone was to accidently crumble up two cakes that were two different strains of Psy.Cub. would this be a problem? What would end up happening? Fruiting of both strains?

i read somewhere on the board here that the two will compete and your fruits will suffer from it. if you havent already done the casing, and you are asking cause you mixed up different types of colonizing jars, do single cake casings.

I've never personally experienced this, but I would guess that if both were dikaryons, i.e. the type of mycelium which gives rise to mushrooms, and both were the same species, they would form barrage zones. These barrage zones are formed when two incompatiable mycelium networks come into contact. They're basically zones between the two networks that are vacant of mycelium growth. They should both still fruit though.

Depends if you would case them in the same tray side by side or mix them together. In the first case they will fruit normally, side by side. If you crumble mix them together, then(as a friend reported) you will get many small fruits from both strains mixed through the entire casing surface.

Thanks for the answers, I was just asking because I wanted to get a better idea of how mycelium works. It wasn't a trick question either. But the reason I asked was, mainly because of the physical characteristics of mycelium growth. (i.e. The cotton style puffy white, the ropy stringy type), Now if a person was to put a small ammount of mycelium into an agar petri dish, and (I saw this on Anno's post of petri dishs) you end up with the two types, cotton and rhizomorphic ropy, why would it be better to take the stringy type? Does this make a difference?

The experience shows that ropey mycelium more often supports fruiting and grows faster than the cottony mycelium.

funny you should post this... i am experimenting with this right now. i've found that the casing is no worse than using a single strain. this pic shows a casing done using hawaiians and mazatecs. unfortunately, i didn't do such a good job achieving an even pinset, so i am also posting the shrooms i have already harvested from this casing.
