casing cakes
    #500039 - 12/24/01 11:32 AM (23 years, 30 days ago)

what al is involved with casing cakes? is it as simple as braking up a cake and throwing vermiculite on top? I have read posts where some people say not to brak up cakes when casing, how does this work? Will a cased cake fruit more and larger? How many cakes should be used per casing? does anyone prefer casing cakes over growing straight off the cake? what are th advantages an disadvantages between the two?

yes it can be as simple as breaking up teh cakes and trrowing verm on the top. thats a casing. with not breaking up a cake it would be pretty hard to put an even layer of any casing on it; but you can try. it still woudl fruit just not as well. casings compared to cakes of equal substrate and volume generally have larger flushes. IE: you get more faster. but if left in good conditions long enough any mycellium will fruit until the nutrients are used up; casings just make everything look nicer and get to you faster. you can use 1 to 500 cakes per casing; whatever you want. im pretty sure most people who have done both would recommend casing and im sure i would too but i have not ventured into casings yet. advantage of cakes- less work and pretty fool proof. advantage of casings is that your mushrooms will generally grow bigger and faster.
