On another note I'm curious if anyone knows why do we get side pins before surface pins if evaporation on the surface promotes pinning as I understand it? Also those spots I see on the surface that are starting to get a slight bit of brown coloring are those pins forming? because I swear I saw the same thing on the sides before the tiny pins formed.

yeah those are pins.
It pins on the side because the microclimate is more favorable usually

What if I layed plastic wrap on the surface until it started pinning alot like the sides and then when I see them I remove it.....? Has this been done?

Because those gaps of air on the side can  actually be more favorable conditions than the surface..

The air/humidity/water droplets in those gaps are perfect.

Even if your surface conditions are perfect you're still bound to get side pins if you don't intervene with a liner or with better compression. Liner blend your only sure bet

But they are inevitable when the conditions are so favorable in those areas.

As far as your tub goes it looks great and yes I believe you'll be seeing pins pretty soon there's definitely primordia in there.

If your surface was covered in a bunch of tiny little droplets of water and your microclimate was on point then you'd be seeing them come out the top just as much. And just as fast.

Sure plastic liner "casings" have been used.

But it's not really necessar. casings for cubes in general aren't necessary.overcomplicated

You're better off going with like an easy dial and just getting it dialed in right.

You can get a tub working for you and your environment and have amazing surface conditions and microclimates that produce wonderfully.

Ahh gotcha I am using pastys ez dial monos and it seems to going great with very little input, I was just curious if the layer of plastic wrap on the surface would potentially speed up pinning, since the conditions on the side would basically be the same thing and those appear way sooner than surface pins. I think its worth the experiment I have 2 tubs might try it on one...

There's nothing wrong with experimenting and trying things out just for sake of experience.

You can do some digging here on casings and the types people have used.. you may  find a few people who have written about casings using plastic or cardboard styrofoam Etc...

When it comes down to it you're best sure thing to do..

would just be to use a liner for the sides and ensure that your surface and microclimate are on point.

I e dialing it in. Get to a point where your surface is always covered in tiny little water droplets. with enough Fae.

and you'll get absolutely no side pins and everything will be focused on the amazing surface.

If you've got a good culture then it'll perform amazingly and you'll start getting much better production on your surface. because focus will be there and nowhere else.

Thanks so much for all the replies man great help, I didn't do a liner this time because I used beefs method of compressing the sub which was supposed to prevent them, also I did put a psuedo casing on with some remaining sub, I did just read a thread where someone else did it and Bod said that whoever told them to do that needs to be taken into a dark room and beaten LOL.

No prob bud.

All good tips.  Beef knows his shit.

Good compression  and psuedos and proper water content  definitely  help PREVENT  a lot.

The problem tho is once the subs start shrinking away from your sides then you're left with those gaps and back to the same problem.

The only way to guarantee no side pins is with the liner.

I myself don't use liners.  I just compress appropriately. And hope for the best.

Sure i get side pins.  But they end up growing out just as well and they're just as good.

I also grow in  shoe boxes . so you can just pop it out of the shoebox set it on top and place it in a water tub or mono.

and then those side pins are just more shrooms growing on the rest of the surfaces and you maximize your realistate.

Im off to bed.  Have a good night :hatsoff:

Can always scrape off the overlay on the surface, give it a light mist and see what happens. I use one of these and just roll up the overlay like a carpet.

Can a single fruiting body contain many strains even though primordia are formed from the tip of a single generative hyphae while the surrounding aggregate supports the dikaryon?

Hi, I am growing GT for the first time and my partner has been involved (like a backseat driver) and we have come to an impasse on our argument.

There's not a whole lot on the internet about the details between S2B and fruiting, at least not with pictures -- so I'm here to ask for 2nd opinion because he's been sulking for the last 3 days that I did everything wrong.

For details:
7/29 S2B. I am using the BoomrBin from NorthSpore, 3lbs grain spawn bag was fully colonized, mixed into two 5 lbs of CVG. I did not put a casing layer because the things I've read said to put a casing layer, to not put a casing layer, and I just went by the instructions that said leave the casing for after seven days, when the substrate is fully colonized. BoomrBin was slighty defective as the sides weren't closing completely, but nothing shipping tape wont fix.

7/30 Within 12 hours, this is what it looked like.

I have a day by day list of photos, but for brevity's sake, this is what everything looked like at 08/05

I had a nagging feeling that they were suffocating from being completely closed, and after checking around a little more, I decided that this was more than the 50-70% that people were talking about when it's time to put the casing.

I read that at this point, I shouldnt put a casing anymore because there are some knots and it would only delay the fruits. Also, since I cracked it open to check at 6 days instead of the 7-14, I should just go along merrily. If I had introduced FAE earlier, there's a possibility of aborts, and he is getting stinky everytime I post a photo update.

Everything looks right to me. This is my first time growing psychedelics and I have embraced this tub and talked to it like it was a growing plant, and have spent a good minute or two pressing my face against the monotub peering inside. My instincts tell me I did nothing wrong.

He insists the mycelia are dying slowing down. This is the last photo I sent him 08/07 and I said these look like hyphal knots

Please advise.
Edit: 1. Is my photo from 08/05 showing more than 50-70% or was it too early
2. What should my next steps be.

I'll tell you straight, it looks totally fine.
The Boomrbin has the polyfil magnets that stick on the sides right? at least yours does? Those are menat to stay on, you shouldnt' have a lot of fae, there should be moisture droplets down the sides like rivulets of water, it should be 95-100% humidity is fine.
You may have dried it out though but not sure. There should be beads of moisture and water on the mycelium like beading up, that evaporates and triggers pinning, causing a microclimate. Yours looks really, reallyd dry.
I would say your husband is right, except fo the part about it being toast. Save it now and you may still get fruit but your hubby is right..
If anything, put all the discs on and dont open or crack it, and dont put a top layer on, just fruit it. dont sabotageyouurself. Let is stabilize in there and leave it be, it will fruit.
