Why skip grains? For all woodlovers I've messed with I haven't had troubles with grains to woodchips xd (I'm truly curious)

This species is incredibly slow on grains. Like I've been waiting on a 500ml jar to colonize since April kinda slow.

Also, some people prefer to skip grains to avoid attracting pests.

Skipping grains altogether for the sake of avoiding pests is not necessary imo. You can achieve the same goal by only using a little bit of it. One qt jar will do for many bags or tubs of preferably sterile woodchip that you can then expand without ending to more (soaked but otherwise untreated) chips. Now you have a humongous patch with just 1 qt or less. A few old ass grains that need to be dug out 1 by 1 is not the motherload for any animals out there.

Also, it's not like you're freed from pests this way. One of my Cyanescens patches is being dug up by a family of moles right now, assisted by 2 birds that are turning it upside down for the insects.

My point is. I don't think all the hassle that comes with avoiding grains is really worth it for this purpose.

For me, I'm just messing around with a new species and trying random things because that's how I enjoy my time.

Someone mentioned Agar to Wood works well and I thought I'd give it a try. BRF is next.

I haven't personally had issues with pests, just trying to give a complete answer.

Hey dude if caeruleorhiza is slow on grains for you, then it's more than likely a culture issue. It could be genetic or some weird contamination. If it's contamination then that will usually clear up once on wood. So no biggies. BUT I would try LB Tek if you havent yet to start expanding this one 😎 you'll be pleased with the speed. Even the most laggy cultures and species move really fast.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/29438158#top

The biggest thing is starting with liquid culture and inoculating the entire surface of the container with a back and forth squirting pattern.

Thanks for the tip Pheno! I'll read up on that tek

I'm only using 2nd hand knowledge to say that my culture is clean. I've been keeping a journal of the different things I've tried with this species.

I'm working with the T3 from this post:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/29598254#29598254

TCO said it was 'clean enough' two posts further down, so I've been playing with that culture. It has been through a CS, and I'm practicing pulling aerial mycelium since it's spikey. Susequent generations don't look that much different than this culture.

I'm working blind here with some voices in the dark for guidance, so there is a 98% chance that I'm just wrong and off base.

Still, it's unlikely I'll have clean spawn in time for a fall harvest this year which means I have a good 10 months to have something viable worked out to be ready for next year. That's part of the reason I'm messing around, I got time and materials in spades.

Dude I think it's unlikely to get anything in Section Aztecorum to fruit within the first year. So I wouldn't worry too much about that regardless. But I think if you were to try something with very low volume then it could happen. you want colonization as fast as possible though.

I would take one of those chips out of your sugar dish first and place on a new agar dish. This MIGHT get it to throw ropes fast because of the nutrient change. If not. Just drop a wedge in LC and try an lb Tek tray. It's low volume, will colonize fast regardless of the culture, and could possible get fruits this coming season

I just read the tek, I'm definitely going to give it a try. I have most of the supplies already. I added a couple notes about it to my journal.

So far I'm 0/1 with woodlovers surviving a northern canadian winter outside. That's the next challenge with these guys. My Azures fruit every year, but these long-term fruiters may be out of my reach.

Even with a foot of snow, the azure patch at my brother's house was nothing but Trich food when we looked this spring.

I'm thinking of bringing my long-term woodlover pots inside during the winter and keeping them hydrated enough not to die.

Never grew woodlovers, I have Alenii spores, and am interested in Serbica.

Thing is, I'm in 5b/4b climate zones, so I guess this is not the right time to try anything outdoors. Perhaps over the winter I should get cultures going on grains, and then as soon as it thaws in spring, dig a hole and mix with woodchips for a Fall harvest? Is that it?

Now, in the 4b region, there is private property forests and LOTS of fallen, massive trees from a huge storm a few years ago. After a bit of googling, in seems the window for colonizing those is long gone because other mycelium will have established itself. Right?

Should I use store bought woodchips, or filling the hole with fallen branches and twigs? Because I have that in an infinite supply there, but I suppose they might have to be fresh as well so that there aren't competitors there?

I'm very interested in creating patches that could survive winters in Quebec. Seems like Serbica might be a good option for that.

I'm guessing indoors is possible yet not so worth it, or is a monotub totally fine?

sorry that is a shit ton of questions, thanks!

I think youre on the right path with caeruleorhiza surviving up there! And honestly dude, as crazy as it sounds, I think ovoids could too. I think it's definitely worth a shot anyways. And the. Huskies thoughts on serbica varieties would be a good option too. And then there's Canadian aztecorum that might make it as well. I believe they found a new species in alaska maybe a couple years ago 🤔 I remember seeing that. Need to do a little research on it myself.nif someone could get their hands on that, that would be great. I'm wondering if Alaska Appalachian has been looking for it 🤔 can't even recall off hand if it's a woodlover though.

@huskies, a lot of times it doesn't matter if other species are existing on these chips already in the wild. Most psilocybe woodlovers are very aggressive and can out compete existing fungus. Not always the case, but I would definitely try it. You could always bring a bucket out and fill it up with this wood and ferment it for a few weeks, inoculate it, and then put it back. Or you could also buy some mulch of course.

And now would be a great time to start cultures and get them on grain. Or more towards then end of summer. Last winter I had monotubs filled all the way up with grain and just let them colonize all winter long in the garage (heated garage.) what's great about doing that is you can use like one myco quart of spawn for an entire 54 qt tub of mulch and it moves fast!

Thanks Pheno great info! I guess you meant tubs filled with jars, right? Or were you colonizing monotubs with mulch already, and then expanding that outdoors? If so, do they even fruit indoors? I guess woodchips don't get spent as much.

That sounds really good tbh.

Last questions:

Fermenting sticks? Like, grab a bunch, grab a bucket of lake water, bundle them up with twine and plop them in? I guess that is more appetizing for the mycelium?

You think outdoor gathered wood would overall be better then?

My GF has a free mulch/woodchips access, not sure how much the type matters.

I suppose if I am doing something that hopefully survives the winter, Serbica would be the better bet?

Yeah you can ferment sticks like that. Sticks would take a little bit longer than mulch. Just soak them till they sink usually or start to. What fermenting does is kill all the existing mycelium on the wood. So your starting from scratch again.

I don't think outdoor gathered wood would be better than mulch. Mulch is my favorite to use. It has fine pieces and thick pieces. And is the fastest by far. Has better water retention too.

Serbica
Caeruleorhiza
Azurescens
Northern Ovoids
East Canadian aztecorum
Those ones would be my first options for canada or Alaska.

What I mean about colonizing in tubs is that I would use one of my old cube monotubs. 54 qt I think. Fill it about 3/4 the way with mulch and then add a jar of grain spawn. Mix it all up and then put the lid on it. Let it sit all winter long colonizing and then come spring, dump it outside to start a new bed. I wouldn't try to fruit that much woodlover volume inside. It would take forever and take up too much room in my cold fruiting chamber. I would use shoe boxes for that or shallow totes of any kind.

If you use large tubs instead of making the patches in the ground you can move the tubs into a shed or garage over Winter so they escape the freezing temperatures.

I've found that some wood lovers grow really slowly on grain too which I think is down to excessive nutrient levels as high nutrients substrates can reduce exploratory growth. I've found wood chips actually colonise quicker than grain with some wood loving species in side by side experiments.

The other thing I like about going agar to wood chips is that I've found good performance on grain doesn't always translate to good performance on wood so by filling my germination pots with wood chips it's easy to select the best performing dikaryons on a wood based substrate.

That's actually interesting selecting culture performance in that manner. Never thought about that before. I really don't like doing agar to chips myself. I just use minimal grain. But I agree that you don't want it nutrient rich.

I did notice that the mycelium seemed to jump onto the wood at different rates. The earliest was after about a week and I just found one that I thought was dead but has growth 3 weeks later

They all were inoculated with the same plate, and my original genetic source came as a clone.
