Im not on here much but I wanted to share my failures and success growing Ps. Caeruleorhiza, my first attempt was to sterile hickory smoking chips and they seemed to just die after inoculation, I had read that they hated grain but I also tried that, this jar took about 6 weeks and is 100% colonized the grains are stuck together and you can see mycelium peeking from the husk.

I also inoculated 6 hydrated sterilized quarts of scotts naturscapes  with agar that jumped slow and took about 6 weeks to get to 75% colonization.

The most success I have had with Caeruleorhiza came in the last 2 weeks, on 6/25 I yeeted the above plate to 2 bags of off the shelf scotts I bought for this project that were sitting in my carport, When I checked the bags yesterday they were massively colonized 50% or more, even with 80-100 degree days, unfortunatly I shook the bags before I started reading this thread, I added my 6 quarts back to these bags and poked some holes for airflow as they seem to prefer slightly drier wood, ill be sure to update with some pics in a few weeks once they recover, my plan is to spawn a bed under this oak tree that I planted 15+ years ago, im going to remove the current mulch and spawn the inocculated mulch :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

I mean not fresh fresh. You don't want green! Chop them trees down and chip this year. Maybe be ready next year after winter 🤔

Thanks for sharing!

I'm making a journal for my Caeruleorhiza attempt and collecting tidbits of information.

You're welcome to pop by!

It would be interesting to test exactly what is too fresh when it comes to wood chips. Some of what I used for this year was just weeks old.

They'll colonise and digest fresh wood and woody plant material. This is Wavy Cap mycelium on fresh hemp stems.

And again on a variety of different substrates. Top left. Fresh hazel. Top right. Dried and soaked hazel. Bottom left. Fermented beech chips. Bottom right. Soaked dried Miscanthus grass stems.

Well I have a lot to learn, but this year i cut and chipped fresh big-leaf maple and fed it to cyanescens.  I cut and chipped it green, just as they were beginning to bud out.  I took the chips home and made the beds the next day, because they were sitting in my truck, I know I didn't let them stay long.  All done within a week.  No drying of anything.  No hydrating wood chips, either, because they were fresh.

Look at them eating the maple:

It's also very important to point out that many wood decomposing active species have easily propagated and expandable mycelium, however the presence of mycelium has no bearing on the probability of fruit other than to say that it's a necessary condition but by no means a sufficient condition for fruit.

I suspect the mycelium will have difficulty colonizing the chips with a very low probability of producing a flush but, if any of them will pull it off it would be cyans, but I highly doubt it.

I couldn't help myself

I didn't want to hear it at the time, but i've been suspecting there is wisdom in not feeding fresh chips.  There are a lot of factors, and I fed that patch a lot of fresh wood chips for how much spawn was added, but that patch fully colonized quickly, but didn't ever fruit.  Slime mold moved in and they look mostly dead there now.

Fucking slime mold, it just showed up again this week.  I scoop it up like dog poop.

Update photo:

The soil has dried out so it's damp but will still separate into particles. The rain looks like its slowing down with maybe a bit more at the end of the week. I'm going to leave it uncovered and only water it if it gets much drier than it is now.

The mycelium is about a CM below the surface, so hopefully it's 100% colonized and will just happily digest the wood over the next couple months.

Planning to make a new patch here. I have some wood that's colonized by ps cyan/wayan and subs mycelium.

So far the plan is to put some rocks at the bottom with a metal net above them (the way this garden is built is on a slope so the water will drain into a pipe). From there I'll just add wood/dirt. Any advice for layering or anything really? I live in a sub-tropical climate

I really love that cultural vernacular: 'bricked out'

I love tapping on bricked out mycelium to hear the drum noise it all makes

Nate:  I don't know your climate but that spot looks pretty exposed, so I'd think that a bottom layer of good soil would be good for holding water and supporting plant life, with wood on top for fungi.  Are you thinking of having plants in there?  I'd think like small perennial plants.  Also i'd leave the metal out of there, it will just rust away, but rocks will last.

Location is PNW. The plan is to leave them as is and give it a good top layer for microclimate come fall. These pots are shaded and receiving moisture consistently. I think Chosen One uses 5 gallon pots with not much else.

Yep. Mostly 4 gallon pots. A few 5's and some random smaller pots. Anything I get my hands on really.
Everything is kept under a large white Jasmine bush, an Italian plumb and grape vines to avoid too much direct sun. Over the course of the summer leaf and fir tree debris falls on them naturally so they are fairly protected by the time the heat of summer hits. I usually water them twice a week when that happens. Sometimes it leads to early fruiting but that's fine with me.

Psilocybe allenii. Leaves added for a pretty pic. No other intentions.

Psilocybe aztecorum

Psilocybe subaeruginosa
