Never heard of this and it is certainly not critical in any way whatsoever.  I would be wary of any more advice from that information source.

This applies to species like Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) but unlikely to effect actives providing you don't use fresh wood materials which would be very difficult indeed considering you require dead/dry wood debris to cultivate actives ; )

Ahh, I see.  Will there be a noticeable difference with the shiitakes (i.e is it suggested to use wood cut in the winter just to MAXIMIZE shiitake yields, and they will still grow)?

I don't get it stipe, we use dead wood for all the saprophites.  I've never heard anyone suggest using dry wood.

The only difference with psychoactive woodlovers is that they use wood chips,  but the same is used for Pleurotus and Stropharia etc.

I'd like to add here that it is better for the trees health if you cut them when they're dormant.

I don't understand what you're saying, felling a tree is usually bad for it's health across the board.

All commonly cultivated wood decomposing gourmet species can be grown on dried/dead chips, sawdust, or logs/branches that have been allowed to rest for at least 2 weeks.

Actives like Psilocybe cyanescens, allenii, ovoids, azures, require sawdust, chips, or shredded wood material to grow in beds. You wouldn't fell a tree only to inoculate the branches with plug spawn from active species. Dry wood = dead wood.

You don't need to fell a tree to get wood from it and put it in a chipper.
Many species will grow back with more vigor and a longer lifespan if you coppice or pollard them.

what i'm saying is I don't understand you saying something applies to shiitake but is unlikely to affect actives.

They all eat dead wood, they are saprophites.
In my book there's freshly cut wood that's still wet, and there's dried dead wood.
(it's easier to chip wet wood).

This year I cut green hardwoods and got a truckload+ of wood chips from them.  they were freshly cut green wood, not aged 2 weeks or whatever, chipped fresh.  Not dead I guess.

Fungi love them though.

And they're still wet, so they must not be dead.  (well, they are alive with mycelium)

The trees have responded well and are all growing back nicely

You've failed to read the question and answer correctly.

Question:

Does it matter what season I harvest wood in?

Answer: No, that applies to something other than Psilocybe cultivation.

Yes, you can cut limbs or fell tress to produce wood, but does the season matter? It does not, unless you're growimg shiitake. The end.

Got it, yeah that makes sense.

I talked to one shiitake grower who said you harvest in season and wait two weeks then inoculate so that the bark will stay on for several years through subsequent flushes.  She said the bark may be more likely to fall off if wood is found out of season.

The logs destined for shiitake inoculation require at least 2 weeks to rest before inoculation because tree's have a natural defense against fungi, so inoculating fresh logs is counterproductive.

If you read the link posted on the previous page you'll see why wood harvesting seasons apply to shiitake farmers but not at all to Psilocybe farmers. Whether the wood is harvested in or out of season, whether it is chipped from trunk, limb, or branch is all irrelevant so long as you've allowed the materials to dry and you haven't used pine or cedar.

I just don't think allowing the materials to dry is necessary at all.

Even for log cultivation, people recommend cutting the wood and letting it age 2wks+ in a shady spot off the ground, so it doesn't dry too much before inoculation.

I really do not understand why you can't read my responses.

Read carefully:

Shiitake growers use limbs of a certain length and diameter cut from trees and allowed to sit for 2 weeks prior to inoculation, they are not dried, not even slightly.

Psilocybe growers:

Have you ever once in your entire life grown Psilocybe mushrooms on wet chips freshly produced from limbs or felled trees? No, I'd say you likely haven't, neither have I, and I'd bet others would report the same experience.

When you plant beds of Psilocybe cyanescens, ovoid, allenii, or azure, you are not inoculating wet fucking chips or sawdust, you are using dried chips/sawdust which have been appropriately hydrated for the application intended.

Shiitake log grows have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the cultivation of Psilocybe mushrooms, period.

Can we get back on topic, this is becoming ridiculous.

that's exactly what he said?

And it's not about "think", it's about "show". show me.
doesn't matter what anybody thinks, that's magic.
what matters is what the mushrooms do and don't do and they don't like raw green wood. even shreds have to dry on the outside first.

I love turning the chainsaw long ways and shredding off all them little shreds. boy do mushrooms love them and even that tiny, they have to pre-dry most of the way and be wet with water for mushrooms to climb on. All woodlover psybes like shreds.

Well I have a lot to learn, but this year i cut and chipped fresh big-leaf maple and fed it to cyanescens.  I cut and chipped it green, just as they were beginning to bud out.  I took the chips home and made the beds the next day, because they were sitting in my truck, I know I didn't let them stay long.  All done within a week.  No drying of anything.  No hydrating wood chips, either, because they were fresh.

Look at them eating the maple:

I would not be the least bit surprised if cyanescens fruited from fresh cut chips (they're essentially weeds) but this has nothing at all to do with shiitake logs, seasonal wood harvesting, or anything else. I do have doubts for that bed but, stranger shit has happened, cyans don't really care much about what they're fed.

I'll just excuse myself from this conversation it's all over the map, so to speak. Y'all have a wonderful day.

This is bold and I'm not sure I want to say it, until I've seen it at least a couple more times with more species, but I think they fruit off shreds like a chip

How long after you made the beds, was that picture taken? At least 2 weeks or more?

Cyans are the most forgiving, least particular and can have softwood and leaf debris in there. But I bet that picture is more than 3 or 4 weeks after the beds were laid.

nobody said it killed em?

It's also very important to point out that many wood decomposing active species have easily propagated and expandable mycelium, however the presence of mycelium has no bearing on the probability of fruit other than to say that it's a necessary condition but by no means a sufficient condition for fruit.

I suspect the mycelium will have difficulty colonizing the chips with a very low probability of producing a flush but, if any of them will pull it off it would be cyans, but I highly doubt it.

I couldn't help myself

Damn, I’m sorry I started such a heated debate!

I did learn a lot from it though, stipe. I appreciate your advice.

I am confused about this though “Have you ever once in your entire life grown Psilocybe mushrooms on wet chips freshly produced from limbs or felled trees?”

This is actually what I planned on doing. I inoculated white oak logs cut June 4th with  shiitake plugs after waiting 1,2, 3 weeks (as an experiment).  I did not realize that optimally I should have cut the logs in winter for shiitake. I also used wine cap + chestnut sawdust spawn from Northspore to inoculate the wood chips from the same tree after waiting 3 weeks.

I was planning on using the same wood chips with psilocybe cyanescens…

Sorry if I am beating a dead horse, just need to get this right! Appreciate u guys
