My new professional monotub

Hey guys. Here is my new tub version 4.0 :grin:

It is a bit smaller then shoebox but I think dimensions are ok - 25cm length, 18cm width, 18 cm height. I added those big filters and micropore tape from the inside. Outside I have added plastic foil so that I pervernt gas exchanges during supstrate colonization.

Some people says those filters are totally unneceserry... I think it depends of a room cleanliness.

This time I didn't put liner so that I can see what is going on around the cake.

Field capacity was great, I have added verimculated and gypsum this time, ratio is 1/5 so yeah, please tell me what do you think about it :wink:

Looks good and should work fine. I used regular size shoe boxes and used to line with plastic and fill with the sub. I found a Tupperware container to fit in the shoe box and the add the sub to it. It is much easier to harvest, and you can add a little water to the bottom of the shoe box for humidity. There are a few holes with filter tape, and I flip the lid for fruiting. Good luck on your grows.  Picture for reference.

What's the title referring to about professional??  Sorry, I'm not sure if I missed something.  Should work well, look forward to seeing your results with it!:cool:

My plan at first was to grow without those fancy holes and filters, some people convinced me that it is unnecessary, but in the end I decided to make it 'professional' with all those fancy good-looking filters just because I have it xD

No benefits here.
It would either mold away as you restrict gas exchange,
or dry out as it is nearly an open air grow.

It´s not about that.
You dial in to your environment,
means temps and humidity.
If you f.e. live in desert, you don´t want many filters.

Ratio 1:5 and the substrate is only about 4-5cm?
These bottom holes don´t serve you,
you can spend way more water if you double up in substrate height.

Huh? Why did you wrap the tub in plastic wrap? This is a new one for me. :lol:

You will have to see how it performs in your environment. That's really all monotub modifications are for. The way you have it now all shut up and plastic wrapped, you may as well just not have any holes and use an unmodified tub with the lid cracked when it fruits.

The benchmark of how “professional” a tub looks should be how well it performs. Wall to wall flushes look professional. That’s just my opinion. The jury seems to be out on this particular design it seems.

The substrate thickness is 5 cm, and I have also pressed down my substrate hard.

Actually, I think that I should remove that plastic wrap, because filters would prevent moisture from escaping the tub anyway and I don't want heat inside the tub since the temperature in my room is 30 these days, but I'm running air condition.

Haha, yeah, different environments require different monotub; those with holes can be tuned, it prevents entering spores from outside, we'll see!

Don't ever prevent gas exchanges. Your info may be outdated as we no longer consider colonization/fruiting two different things. We go directly to fruiting at spawn.

I have removed plastic foil last night and today I see that I don't have any moisture on the lid anymore. I believe it would return as the mycelium colonize and since I don't have liner I can see how myc is advancing. Who cares about sidepins... :tongue2: :sun:

If you are worried about sporeload when spawning to bulk its probably already a fail.

These developments happened a while ago, depending on your definition of “a while”. This hobby has been evolving quickly as more people get involved, especially those with analytical backgrounds. Should look up Reverands’ work on dried tea and it’s effects on potency, MojaveMyc’s work on manure-free pan cyan cultivation, fahsthers’s work on using ziplock bags as fruiting chambers, just to name a few.

I only started this hobby about 16 months ago and by then fruiting conditions had collapsed with colonization, fanning and misting had died, as well as a few other things. Liners are optional if you pack down the sub well enough.

Gypsum should not hurt, just isn’t necessary. Some folks still swear by it!

I’ll say this, some of us reduce FAE early on for various reasons. I live where it’s wicked dry much of the year, so for a little while I run LESS FAE, but never none. We tweak bins based on their needs, not by wrote tek, as each bin may need minor tweaks until you get your tek dialed in for your specific conditions.

Awesome to see you adapting with new knowledge, that’s something people don’t always do.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and exploration is cool. That being said I'm pretty sure we have solidly established that automation is generally inferior to passive systems and has more vectors for failure. Personally I always wanted maximum yields for my grows, but there was also zero way I could see myself trying to grow at scale with automation. Greenhouses were a nightmare and yet still a better concept for automation than tubs. Tubs just by nature have the wrong configuration to automate well.

My whole thing was if I'm running a lot of tubs I need to make every step as simple as possible. That means the holes are small so I dont need to tape them, its dialed in so I don't need to do a thing until harvest. No messing with the tub, just stack it and move on. IME the best results are when you dial it in and leave it be.



TL;DR mushrooms do best when you dial them in and leave them alone. Being complicated often yields poor results.

I'm not worried about sporeload because I had a successful tub 2 weeks ago. I had some problems with cobweb mold when I started 1  year ago, but now when I'm working with agar and a laminar flow hood, everything seems fine, only trich comes from time to time :smile:

Yeah, I haven't dived yet into the history of cubensis cultivation, but now I see that people started cubensis cultivation for the first time in the 1970s (misting and faning), and until then, they were only foraging for cubensis, which was a very dangerous activity.

Yes, we have to dial into our environment. Since my air conditioner is running all day long, because outside is nearly 40*C, I think the AC is making the air dry, so I think that I should actually cover all filter holes except maybe 1, in order to achieve humidity inside the tub. One bigger filter hole is probably enough FAE at this phase. Because the lid surface is totally dry, it's not the optimal tub environment IMO.

Strong mycelium + great field capacity is hard to contaminate, I think, that's why it's ok to have untapped holes.

Those are old pics, I retired a while back. But at one point I was rotating 48 tubs and when you got a cycle like that, simple but reliable becomes gold.
