No Holes in Monotub Yet. Need suggestions shotgun FC/straught monotub?
    #13589664 -

So AFOAF has some 64 Qrt bins full of substrate and rye grain that has been colonizing for a week but the colonization is a bit slow. I do not have any holes in the bins yet because i thought if i were to have holes and tape em up then i would not need them during spawn run. SOoooo. I have no holes in my monotub and was wondering first..should i put some holes in it while it is colonizing and still tape them up? Second, Whaat would be the best method for my set up when it is ready to fruit? Should i drill 6 large holes and stuff it with polyfill or a punch of small holes and fan it once or twice a day? Appreciate any feedback fellow shroomerites

If money isn't a serious issue, I would buy an identical tub, so I could make my holes without disturbing the substrate and then transfer it from it's current home to it's new home. (assuming you used a sturdy plastic liner and can pick it up easily.)

If I were a noobie I might try the shotgun first, since you'll be hyper-anxious and will want to do some misting. A polyfill mono is more set and forget and is easier to overwet if you mist it. It's nice to learn/observe the needs of the shrooms b4 you attempt a set and forget type setup.

Money is an issue. So are you saying i should drill holes even during colonization. Do they need to get more fresh air because i was under the impression that you should be building up CO2 and taping up all the holes in the chamber?

Naw, the gap under the lid is sufficient gas exchange during colonization. I do shoebox sized tubs fill almost all the way up and put the lid on during colonization and there's enuff ge.

I meant for birthing. There's no compelling reason to go one way or the other (mono or msg i mean).

altho, if money is an issue, a 2" hole saw is not cheap.

Hey I would try and wait until
full colonization. That way your
substrate is stronger and healthier.

I would just wait until your about to
induce fruiting conditions, Lysol the
shit out of your grow area,
sterilize everthing, and drill the holes.
But that's just my opinion.

That is what i feel i should do. The reason why i was hesitant was because of the plastic particles flying everywhere while drilling. Im thinking about heating up a box cutter and then cutting out about 6 holes in each FC stuff it with polyfill, than wait and enjoy.

That would work, try not to breathe too much burning plastic.

Also one last question. So its been a week and its hardly colonized. I have open the bin twice to check out how the growing is coming. THere is lots of moisture on the side of walls so i am going to wait till it hits two weeks but i know alot of people say it should be colonized within 7-10 days. If it hits two weeks and is not fully colonized, do i have something to worry about?
Please any help works

Yeah it's not a good sign when growth is slow. After two weeks i'd suspect something was wrong unless the temps were just just really low.

i have my first mono fruiting and i almost made the same mistake as you. you can look for my thread "cultivating a mono of wbs need help fast" if you want to read some more opinions about gas exchange and such just go to the first page  of that thread. But i decided to drill the holes first cause i figured it would be easier and more sterile, this way i dont get plastic shavings all thru the sub and dont have a dirty drill bit stirring things up. i went with five, one inch holes on each of the long sides and 2 holes on each of the short sides.(cause a 1 in bit was the best i had) I then taped them and taped around the lid cause there should be enough gases in the tub for ge during cultivation. WHat kinda tools you working with do you have to dill or do you have a jigsaw?

Neither yet but i got access to a drill. I was thinking a box cutter would work best because there wont be so many shavings everywhere, but i did read your post so i feel confident about not having holes in my tub right now but will be doing the large holes when its time for fruiting. the temp is room temp which is about 75. im trying anything to speed up colonization and my substrate was at field capacity so i dont know what the hold up is?

I'm gonna guess that your definition of field capacity is too wet.
