Currently on day 5 of colonizing a 58qt shotgun mono for my first grow. Coir and too little coffee(<.5qt, all I had at the moment, know how to get more now) as substrate. The top is completely covered, but not thick yet, perhaps first signs of threading, but could be wrong. Should be interesting to see how much misting/fanning it will require. the humidity here is generally above 50%(seems like 70-80 most of the time).

This seems like a good place for a noob question(have searched quite a bit). What exactly is 100% colonization? When primordia begin to form? When it begins to pin? Or just when the entire top is covered by myc? Frosted the top with extra wbs, so I know the top can be misleading. Will probably let it go for at least 10 days to be safe.

Hopefully others jump on this thread. Seems like a good place for some great info. :thumbup:

it just means the top is covered w/ myc.

10 days is wise, good plan

That's what I thought,especially since they sat out a week longer then usual and there were no signs of contamination in the jars.I'm very thorough with my sterile procedures not to mention I clean house religiously once a week and before doing anything related to mushrooms I always spray the air and everything down with oust,wash my hands thoroughly,I wear clean fresh from the dryer long sleeve shirts,latex gloves which I then wipe down with isopropyl alcohol,breathing/dust mask.


I'm going to make a still air box soon and make some syringes from the prints I got from contests,trades & give aways in the marketplace and also I am going to just go ahead and properly pasteurize my coir/verm bulk rather then dumping 170° F water over it in a bucket.


Things on my list to get:

Spawn/Filter patch bags

64 qt to 110 qt Sterilte for still air box

2x 4" pvc couplings for still air box

Pair of rubber dishwashing gloves for still air box

10x 10cc BD Luer Lock syringes with 18-16 gauge needles

I've been using these:

walmart ALWAYS has them on "sale" for between $5-6...  I cut a (roughly) square hole in the lid and duct tape a plexi-glass window in for light (as well as to be able to tell when it's colonized and ready for fruiting), poke 4 holes (one at each corner) with a small nail in the bottom of the tubs (MUCH more forgiving if you leave your subs a little wet by mistake), then have various sizes and configurations of holes for FAE...  I'll post some pics when i can.  Currently testing some 18 gallon clear tubs also, they seem to work quite a bit better, more even pin sets, but much more side pinning though...  probably could be remedied using darker bags on the bottom or by painting the bottoms of the tubs up to the sub depth...

Whats the point of the gloves, you going to do attached gloves and flame inside the box? Thats a real pain in the ass way to do it.

Hes right. I thought it would be a good idea to tape some tyvek sleeves to my box. What a pain in the ass man.

As long as you have a mask on, and take your time going in and out of the box you should be just fine.

Its all about smooth controlled movements and technique.

I hope its only healthy myc ive got...didnt notice anything funky/smell anything..


Should i give them a couple more days before fruiting???

Wait till they are 100% colonised before fruiting. Some people even wait up to five days after 100% to fruit.

It really wasn't all that bad,especially when you consider the fact that my old glovebox was made out of plexiglass sheets so I was able to make it as big as I wanted.When all was said and done it actually measured 42" long x 30" deep by 30" tall....plenty of room to work with.

The new one will just be getting made out of a 64 qt tub and it's just for syringe making purposes only.

This is what I am thinking of doing my next try:

Place 1/2 brick coir and 1 quart verm in bucket,use hot water to expand the coir and bring the mix to field capacity and then loading the bulk substrate into filter patch bags and properly pasteurizing for 90 minutes using water as the heat transfer medium and being sure to not let the temp get above 160° F anytime during the 90 minute pasteurization process.

I'm not sure If I want to switch from jars to bags though for the grain spawn.

I think I'll be making a few syringes from one of the CRS prints I got from The Shroomey 1 when he was having a a trade for stamps.I'll be giving a few away in the marketplace or have a contest when the time comes so I can spread the wealth and bump up my trade rating so I can take part in the free syringe and print threads over in the marketplace.

Not sure though,this is what I have in my print collection so far:

1x GT (from Fungal Growth)

1x Thai Lipa Yai (from Danstice)

1x Puerto Rico (from prozak812)

1x Mazatapec (from melius09)

1x Brazil (from Base Icks)

1x Nepal Chitwan (from Toad Stool)

2x Columbian Rust Spore (from The Shroomey 1)

I am leaning more towards using one of the CRS prints because A)They came from The Shroomey 1 and well he is a TC so I definitely trust his printing skills and sterile procedures,and B) I have two of them lol!

10x Large (8" x 5" x 18") filter patch bags

10x 10cc BD Luer Lock Syringes

10x BD 18g 1.5" needles

Plan on ordering through TMS.

Here's mine, my first project post PF-TEK.

Strain is B+, (from a sponsor)

8 BRF cakes spawned to 1/2 brick of coir, 1L verm, 0.75L Gypsum

This is 7 days after fruiting, you can see there were a few 'early birds' that have got quite big.  The photo quality is pretty poor, but you can make out the pins that are distributed pretty evenly throughout the substrate.

I also included a pic of the few remaining BRF cakes.

I know a clear tub would have been preferable, but all I could get was a translucent blue tub.  I now have 6 20L clear tubs for when my 11 WBS jars are colonised!

Here's my tubs, had to pick a few of the early birds at lunch time, they're in the dehydrator now!  A few of the cakes grew like crazy!

Here's the tub I'm going to be converting into a wee MSG. I have no idea what its size is.




It's clear on every size and has 2 ~4 inch holes on two sides :lol:

I'm going to cover up the holes. Don't ask how.
