Mini Monotub Idea.

I currently have a bunch of PF cakes colonizing and have about 1 week left before i can fruit them. My Concept behind a mini tub would not be to spawn the cakes into a larger quantity, but rather to just use a smaller clear container to house crumbled PF cakes that will be cased in the bottom of the container. I though of this idea after seeing that the monotub grow logs that have had some good success using the substrate as the source of humidification in itself.

Also i can see this technique saving a lot of space and simplifying the fruiting process.Does anyone have experience or ideas that can contribute to this concept and do you believe that this method would provide the same ample source of humidity that a regular monotub would?

Im more interested in information on how a monotub functions as a humidifier... my best friend is the search engine, and this time it failed me :frown:

I believe that the humidity in a monotub comes from the biomass of the substrate itself. Generally the substrate will create it's own heat while the mycelium is breaking it down, this in combination with gases released during substrate take over gives us RH.

soo my question is do you believe that this technique would work? i am interested in making a few small monotubs using this non spawning technique... just strait crumbled cakes cased at the bottom.

Ya I love mono tubs you just dunk the sub really good and make sure to use a really moist caseing layer. The hardest part is getting the right size holes to let in proper airflow but still stop the humidity from getting out.

Minitub's work great....




The container is six inches deep and the lid can be easily mondified by cutting out the center and streching out a peice of seran wrap over top and then taping it tight to the lid.

I look for condensation on the lid as a sign of a good humidity, they also work good for fruiting cakes....pretty much anything.

thanks can you elaborate on your design a little more? Also what substrate did you use? and how are the yields and pinsets on your minitub?

The container is just a empty Pet Pal kitty liter container.

The substrate was 3 litres of a 50/50 rye/millet mix spawned to 2cm of coir/coffee grind.

All I did was wrap the container in tinfoil and tape it in place so the only light exposure is from the top, other then having to bend some tinfoil over the lip of the container the only major modification is the lid...

thanks for both your input... i have just found COIR a block away from where i go to school. I am going to drop by during the week and pick up some bricks :cool: can you give me a good link to a pasteurization or sterilization tek for the coir on its own.. I'm new and i don't feel like hunting down a bunch of ingredient for a crazy mix yet.

i think im going to spawn my cakes directly to coir on its own... i will boil the water and add it to the coir in a bucket that will fit its total expanded size. then im going to make a bunch of little homes for my cakes. my reason for making a bunch of smaller tubs(not too small) is because i want to try and succeed as much as possible. at least have 2 tubs. I will be on my quest with the search engine for now.

That idea should work. I had better pinsets and flushes with a double tub setup using the smaller tubs though.

The tubs used here were 12qt:



I would dunk the cakes prior to fruiting and make sure your casing layer is properly hydrated. Once you set up the tub it should be on autopilot and not need any maintenance until after the first flush.

IMO straight cakes dont hold enough moisture to be used in a monotub, mini or not..they dry out quite quickly ..substrate that holds water/moisture is defintly neccesary..ie coir , hpoo...ect.

They're taped together at the ends. If you click on the pic and look carefully, you'll see the masking tape on the left and right sides. I believe that particular tub was WBS spawned to coir. PF jars crumbled and cased would work, but you won't see many people using them to get the 4"+ depth of substrate you need for decent flushes. It's much more logical to spawn them to a bulk sub.
