How essential is casing layer if I'm going to fruit from a grain jar?

Has anyone tested the impact of casing vs not having one on yields, etc?

I would say 💯 essential. If you're looking to top fruit a grain jar you might get a single wimpy fruit or two if you dont use a top layer.

This was a simple handful of coir verm on top of these two grain jars.

Thanks for the response, how thick would you recommend of a casing layer for a jar of that size?

Have some jars going and want some fruits a bit sooner, so I'm gonna try this.

The first photo in my signature came from a jar that was too bacterial to safely spawn to tub. Coir on top, carefully pressed down until it reached the bottom of the jar rim, sandwich baggie on top, and misted occasionally to maintain surface moisture until the fruits were big enough to maintain a microclimate.

Dumping some coirverm onto the grain in a jar is pretty easy. Dont overthink it. Maybe 3/4" thick or so.
