Straw - Casing to Fruiting - How Long?

I have a few test batches of straw that are colonized & cased - some spawned with flour cakes, some with birdseed. My temperature conditions are not optimal, as the wheat colonized at cooler temps than recommended. Their temperatures really didn't change when I went from incubation to fruiting - the only change being an exposure to light, I guess. I have casings that were handled the same way, and they are beginning to fruit. One is surprising the hell out of me, since it's kicking ass. All previous attempts were total failures. I've already learned the "mushroom lesson of patience", so I'm not standing over my straw, begging it to pin. I'm asking what a reasonable wait period is, given the fact that I dont' know what kind of straw I'm working with. I found it at Gardenridge, it comes in small bales, and it's labeled "maxi-straw". It's golden looking, so I figured I'd give it a try. I dont' want to sit around for 2-3 weeks, waiting for pins, if I'm working with a straw that won't fruit, no matter what. It colonized as expected, would that be a good sign?

yes youll be fine. if you dont see at least mycellium thru the casing layer in 1 week you can worry; for right now everything sounds like its on schedule. pins should form wel within 2 weeks; depending on teh strain of course.

It can take a while(3-4) weeks. Sometimes you have to cold shock them. Even if the straw is the wrong type, it wont inhibit the substrate from fruiting---well unless it has sometype of commercial coating(toxic) put on it. The mycelia will simply grow through it and still fruit. Granted that it may not get the nutrients from the straw it needs, it should--if given enough time--fruit.:)bluhoney

I do have mycellium thru the casing layer on my 2nd test batch, which has been exposed to light for about a week, I guess. The first one must be screwed, though. They are different strains - the one sucking is Maz, and is in the same terrarium as my casings, one of which is fruiting well; the one looking goooood is my Pes Hawaiian. Hmm....come to think of it, that's the strain that's fruiting off the casing in the terrarium, too. The bigger one is my Pes, so maybe they will show me some goodies soon!

bluhoney - how do you go about cold shocking a casing tub that is too large for your fridge? Ice packs? I have had good luck with cold shocking my cakes, and I did cold shock all my smaller casings. But the bigger one won't fit in my fridge - it's probably about a 10 gallon size or so.... Thanks for the info - I guess I'll figure out if my straw sucks once I get some fruits. Back to work on posting pictures, so I can get some eyes-on advice when it's time.

Put some plastic down so water wont wet the floor. Then buy enough bags of ice to cover the entire growing chamber. Cover it and let it sit over night. Ice packs also work and are less messy, but it takes quiet a few.:)bluhoney

The spawn run in straw depends greatly on the strain of course. My friend spawned straw with PESA colonized brf/verm and within 1 week saw 100% colonization. Course this wasnt a very big straw bowl. Just about 6 inches deep using 2 cakes. After casing, using a 2 inch deep casing layer, saw growth within 4 days. Note he didn't put into an incubator because the temps generating by the colonizing straw were enough. Cold shocked in a cooler with ice, and within 4 days saw pins. Before any other "normal" casing, which was prepared the same way, and during the same time.

Yes, my straw colonized completely in about a week, also. Really quite a shock after watching jars crawl slowly. I think my straw is a good 5-6 inches deep, but my casing is much less than yours. Hope that doesn't f me up too much.
