Not the prettiest but two are birthed and in the tub they go.
One is ready to be birthed next Sunday, about 4 others will be 100% colonised in 2-4 weeks!

wow! that was fast! nice work.

For competition, your birth-day pics must to show the cakes before they get rolled in verm/coir/whatever AND also show the words “Cake Wars II” in or on the picture. 

If you’ve already rolled without taking pics, you could easily give ‘em a quick rinse, snap a pic and reroll (won’t hurt anything at this stage).

These were inoculated on the 22nd of March, 5 weeks to 100% then I left them a week before birthing.
I didn’t intend to enter this time but with the one I’m birthing next Sunday, I might do the above as you said.

Nice!

Doesn’t look like mold to me, but it’s a bit hard to tell from thw pic. After *all* parts of the cake are covered in white mycelium, wait one more week for “consolidation” and then birth it from the jar.

You might have some difficulty getting that cake out once it fully colonizes, as the jar looks like it’s got a bit of a lip/shoulder to the shape. There are always ways through/around any problems though, so give a shout if needed.

not sure what you mean by bonsai - my own thought was to cut the cake in half and try to extract each half through the mouth, soak ‘em overnight, put them back together using toothpicks as supports and then roll in more verm…the pieces may knit back together somewhat that way but I’m guessing.

The link didn’t work for me - showed me a vid of some dude burning weeds out of his walkway cracks! ,

What you’re describing is prolly a bit too exotic for competition, but you could for sure do it as a grow along for fun!  We could maybe think about having a creative interpretation class of competition in future Cake Wars…that could get pretty wild. If you do this as a demonstration of concept, it could maybe become a thing in future rounds….just thinking openly here…

Nice work Penman. No I am not entering, though I wish it. Had me a bad relationship crash here on site just now, figuring out why IT wont write back. So I am a little depressed, we had a good relationship on site, but its fun to see the new members, all using PF TEK like I rec. For newcomers. .......

The coir-based cakes have been a bit of a mixed bag so far.


Here are two taking off (both Huautla), along with a Natal Super Strength (ochra) cake with no signs of life yet, same with a couple more behind it. I have a few verm-based cakes too, but I started them later and shouldn't realistically expect to see growth yet. (Doesn't stop me from checking, though.)

I usually inoculate cakes with MSS in the center (or twice off-center, roughly 1/3 and 2/3), so I don't see any visible myc until they're already picking up speed, but the last couple coir-based PF tek cakes I've made have stalled out. I suspect the coir is drying out during the time it takes for spores to germinate and spread, because when I've made coir cakes with a chopstick hole down the center column and poured a glug of LI towards the hole they've worked great.


Another cake, started mid February, clearly stalled. Is it worth still soaking it and just knocking off the uncolonized coir? I'd be fruiting it in a water tub for prints and potentially interesting clones, yield is irrelevant.
