furry, fuzzy cakes...
    #370657 - 08/12/01 12:59 PM (23 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, my friend was looking at pictures of various cakes that are pinning, and she noticed that they don't really look like hers... What she did was, birthed her cakes, and then put about a 1/4 inch of verm. on the top of the cake (the double-ended tek or whatever it's called). So now, about 4 days later, and the mycelium has grown up through the verm, but it is little "chunks" and pieces...

Look at the 2nd picture of the cake HERE . Notice how the mycelium at the top is kind of "whispy", it's covering the verm, but barely... Like a bit of snow on the ground. Well, my friends cake has mycelium in chunks, and when touched, they crush...

Is there something wrong with them? Too high humidity or something? Please reply.

Ok ok, I get it, my friend's a major newb and she's worrying about something that is completely normal... It's just that she's seen pic of other cakes, and most don't have the "chunks"...

Take a look at this pic:

See the "chunks"... Well, you cant really see them too good, but they're there. And on the side of the cake, some verm is stuck to it, and the mycelium chunks are growing on top of them too...

A side view...

She now realizes that this is normal, and there's nothing to worry about, and that pinning will occur soon. I guess these pics are pointless, but any other newbs can take a look at them and see the chunks, so that when they have a cake like this, they'll know it's normal. I guess these chunks are places where pins will start?

Sorry for the crappy quality, my friend is using her video camera to take these pics...

Yes, puscle was having a little fun. (sorry) Those cakes look OK, although not optimal. They're seldom picture perfect.

So how can she make them "optimal"? Or is it too late for that>? By the way, this is her only birthed cake, the rest are still in jars, because she was going to do them invitro. She's having second thoughts though... Any tips for her soon to be birthed cakes? Oh, and she'll probably case some of them, so that'll make it more "optimal".. Thanks puscle.

I guess optimal would be lilly white under studio lighting. Looks great on PF`s page! Don't you worry, you're right on schedule.
